Recommendations- Maui- Kahana (west side)

Hello, I am new to the boards. I am getting married in Kahana on 7/13 (yes, Friday the 13th!!!!) and I'm having trouble finding a photographer, officiant and possibly a caterer (still undecided) that won't charge a "travel fee".... I am very familiar with Maui as we had a condo there for 13 years but of course we sold it a few months before I got engaged :) I have a Maui phone book which is helpful but I know you all are experts :)

And this is my first wedding so it's all new to me as well. We have 15 guests and the B&G. Any suggestions are very much appreciate!! I'm planning on using Costco as much as possible :) I'm a budget/DIY girl!! MAHALO!!

Re: Recommendations- Maui- Kahana (west side)

  • I chose to work with Greg Hoxie I do not know if there would be a travel fee but, I really like the idea of being able to edit my own photos and print them myself. Amen to costco :-)
    Here is his website: http://www.amauibeachwedding.com/

    Hope that helps
  • Get in touch with Melissa McClure - I know she is already going to be on Maui around that time and her work is amazing as are her deals for Hawaiian brides.  She is out of SanDiego and she is super sweeet and fun to be around!  She was our wedding photographer and we loved  her!

is very reasonable amongst Maui photographers, especially if you're able to edit the photos yourselves.

I have emails for 5 - 6 officiants - mostly HI style - which I can send you.  I didn't distinguish b/w fee and travel fee - but found most to be in the $250 - $300 range.

Some of the budget catering options I've read about involve restaurant take-out (e.g. Da Kitchen).  Where your venue is should influence this decision.  If you have to bring in all plates, glassware, etc. it may just be easier to get a more full-service caterer to take care of some of that for you.
  • Kahana is where we always stay! LOVE that area. The rainbows are killer. =D

I think the only people who charged me a travel fee were H&M and the florist. I used Joanna Tano as my photographer (Kim Aihara was the second shooter) and Celebrations Catering (they work out of the Hali'imaile General Store - sooooo good).
  • Photographer: I hired Ben Pigao. He is based out of Portland, but is from Maui. His starting price is cheap and is no frills, but you can add stuff to the package if you want. Since his family still lives on Maui, a lot of costs are already taken care of since he can provide his own lodging and transportation. Also, he does weddings on the side, so he doesn't charge too much to begin with. Find him at http://www.benpigao.com Officiant: We hired Rev. Laki, but I agree with a PP that they are typically ~$200-$300. Caterer: I originally envisioned having Aloha Mixed Plate cater, but found that a more efficient path was to hire an all-inclusive/full service caterer who would be able to provide everything from food, labor, and rentals (linens, chairs, place settings, silverware, glassaware, etc). With that said, we are more than likely hiring Food for the Soul. We haven't, yet, since we have a tasting in a couple weeks. Costco is great for flowers and alcohol! We are going to BYOB for our bar by puchasing at Costco. However, I wanted mainly non-tropical flowers and found Pacific Blue Floral to have the best value for what I wanted...
