Cutaway Suits

Hi Everyone,

Our groomsmen (and the groom) are wearing the english morning/cut away suits.  However, we aren't too keen on the ascots that are provided.  Have any of you had your guys wear these suits with just nice ties?

Re: Cutaway Suits

  • I think a morning suit would look odd with a normal tie.

  • I just wanted to chime in that morning suits are just so attractive!  I love them with the ascots, but I think they look fine with a wider tie as well.
  • The one on the right in this picture looks like just a wider tie....

  • Thanks!  I've been looking for pictures all day and found some with just ties.  It looked nice.  It just stinks that Men Warehouse doesnt have the suits for you to try on until they arrive for the wedding.  So I'm trying to find some ties for the guys and get them and then if they don't use them, then I guess I will try to return them.
  • Is there something in particular that you don't like about the provided ascots?

Really, if you're going to wear morning dress appropriately, then proper neckwear is a requirement. The appropriate neckwear for this attire is the dress ascot (aka dress cravat). Ascots/cravats are not the same as the neckties we're most familiar with. A necktie will look out of place in the outfit.

Also distinguish the dress ascot/cravat from the day ascot/cravat.

The dress version is wider with a thicker material construction, in either a plan or simply patterned finish (ie. Macclesfied). This version is meant to be tied outside the shirt, tucked under the fold-down collar.

The day version is a thinner material that comes in a variety of patterns, bolder at times. This version is meant to be tied completely under the shirt, peeking out from the collar.

There are 2 ways to tie the dress ascot: (1) the loosely tied and pinned method we're most familiar with when we see ascots; and (2) using a traditional four-in-hand knot most gents use for neckties.

If you're not satisfied with the provided ascots, I'd suggest requesting a replacement or even finding another source for them.

  • I have to admit when I first read the subject I initially thought of those suits that male strippers wear that tear away on the sides.

Now I know what I cutaway suit is...thanks!

  • That would be great to request new ascots, except that Men's Warehouse won't do that and we have too many guys out of state to go anywhere else.  It isn't that we don't like them, we just wish that he would have been able to try it on first to make sure that we liked it.  But that's not an option either.

Honestly I've been looking all day and have found plenty of pictures of the morning suits with ties. They look fine.
