Wedding Woes

more house drama

I swear, this whole thing will not end. We walked away from the 30% loan and were planning to just wait until the condo sells and see what the market is like in a couple months. Now the sellers came back and want to know if we'd be interested in renting the house until the condo sells. Oh, and can we move in on the 30th?

Arrrgh. Every time I think we've moved on something sucks us back to this house. This could be an ideal situation. We love the house, we wouldn't have to sink all our liquid cash to get it, and we'd have a few months of at a lower payment. Also we wouldn't be stuck here for another 3-6 months, which is a huge plus.

But I'm not kidding when I said I'd already moved on. I've been looking at other properties online and had resigned myself to the idea of buying something a little cheaper and less nice, then doing the updates our way over the next few years. I feel like I should be jumping for joy over the fact that this offer is still on the table, but I'm just...not.

I also have this (really, completely) irrational worry that once we're in the house we'll realize that the washing machine in the garage thing really should have been a dealbreaker, and then we'll be bound to a sale that hasn't happened yet.

Keep in mind I'm horrible at making huge decisions without having irrational doubts. I was one of those girls who agonized and lost sleep after my wedding dress was ordered because I'd gotten it in ivory and thought maybe I really should have picked white.

honestly, these people just sound emotionally abusive, and i think you and mr. duckis need to just move into a shelter and get restraining orders on these people.

they are way, way too interested in separating y'all specifically from your hard-earned card-makin' money.

You guys realize that my husband thinks i'm crazy for this whole "the universe doesn't want us to have the house" attitude, right?
  • edited December 2011
I wouldn't do it. These sellers are flaky. Also, it sounds like they're getting desperate...maybe the price will be coming down soon.

As we have said to many a woman on this board, who cares what your husband thinks.

Is he pushing to take it?  What happens in 6 months when they kick you out b/c they have found a cash buyer without so many contingencies?

Also, I would not be so eager to pay someone else's mortgage.  IDK.  This is just more and more so not THE house.

How would you feel if you asked a guy out and he said, "Well, only on Tuesdays."  You said, "I don't get paid til Friday so Tuesday won't work for me."  He let you walk away.  And then a few weeks pass and he says, "Well, it's okay that you are paid on Fridays - I really want to date on you Tuesdays and you can just pay what you can now and owe me the rest."  You would RUN away from that dude.

Sounds like you are doing them a huge favor at the expense of your sanity in the long run.

    back away from the house.

these people are WAY too pushy. I'm not sure if you've even gone through inspection process - but I'm betting there is something very wrong that they're hoping to hide.

Also, what do you know about the sales history of the house? how long has it been on the market? have there been other offers that feel through?

Work on getting rid of the condo or pushing through sale of your house to your brother so you guys have the cash ready to go when you find the next house.

I think they just screwed the pooch and they know it.  That is why they're so pushy.

What we put into rent would come out of the selling price. So if we offer 20 dollars and pay a dollar a month for 6 months, we'd be paying 14 dollars once the sale goes through. Also, we'd still be in contract for the duration of the rental period, so they would not be allowed to take other offers on the house. The flip side of that is we'd be locked into the sale as well.

And to be fair, it's not the sellers who are flaky at this point. First it was the lender who didn't come through for the loan we were approved on, then it was us applying for another loan and then not agreeing to the terms.

H does really want the house, so that is a factor. Although if I told him I absolutely don't want it we'd walk away without another thought. The problem is that I DO want it. But I also want a much bigger house on an acre of property by the water for the same price, and we're just not going to get that out here.

We did inspections, there's nothing significantly wrong. In fact, for a house its age it's in really good condition. There are minor issues, like the water heater is 10 years old and it has a tar and gravel roof, but nothing that's a dealbreaker. They bought the house in 2001, did major renovations from about 2004-2008. It was on the market for 4 days when we put in our offer, and we were the first and only.

They priced for multiple offers, so they probably could have gotten 15-20K more for it if they'd let it sit a few weeks. They're moving out at the end of the month. I'm pretty sure the motivation at this point is that their realtor specializes in multi-million dollar listings, and this house is peanuts for her, so she wants it off her plate.

I thought there was some dickery regarding the offers, and counteroffers, etc.  Something like that.

There was drama regarding the listing price vs. negotiations and the seller's thinking they'd have a huge sale without actual buyers willing to pay that.

So what is holding you back?  Just the principle of walking away?

As much as you say this is the Universe is telling you NOT to buy, you could say it is, because you keep getting offers.

    just sayin'.

Yes, for the first 2 days there was dickery over them wanting more than asking price. But after we stood firm they accepted, and they've actually been really patient with our dickery since then.
