Table Assignments

I am clueless on how to do table assignments.  I saw a super creative picture, but it was way too complicated.  What is the best way to assign tables?  I do not want to do actual placecards!

Re: Table Assignments

  • I'm confused about what you want to do. If you just assign tables you can use escort cards.
  • Are you talking about how to display table assignments so the guest know where to sit without using individual place cards?

Place cards refer to a specific seat at a table. Escort cards refer to a specific table with no specific seat required.

Most weddings will (and, IMO all SHOULD) have escort cards. Place cards are generally only used in very formal, black tie affiairs.

Generally you should create 1 card per person or per couple, and set them out on a table alphabetically, by last name. You would then have a cooresponding number at each table. Nothing else is required.

This can also be helpful if you have meal choices- on your RSVP have them initial next to the meal they would like, and you can then use a system to mark each card so the waiters know which meal goes to which guests. This is not necessary if there is only one meal, if you have a buffet, or if your guests order from the waiter.

Sometimes it's fun to use table names instead of numbers, using places you've visited, or favorite films, movies, etc... you can be as creative or as simple, as you'd like.
  • If you don't want to do cards, and you don't need to indicate meal choice, you can just have a chart on a poster board where the names are alphabetized and followed by the table number.

  • I think she is asking how to visualize who is at which table when you are deciding who sits at which table.

The easiest way to do this is to get a bunch of paper plates.  Write every couple's name on its own post-it note, then arrange groups of people in rows who are likely to sit together.  Then, place the appropriate number of people around the paper plates until you fill up the table. When you are done putting everyone at a table, you can move the plates around to decide how to organize the room and which table is assigned which number.
  • Thanks!  Yes I was asking about how to technically do it.  I had no clue what Escort cards were, so this is very helpful.  I like the idea about using paper plates to help with the assignment process.

  • I used Excel, but I'm a nerd. I made circles and just wrote names in 8 cells around each table.

  • I just used a big piece of paper and post-it notes, that way I could move the guests around as needed. It was a lot easier than I thought it was going to be. I sat down with my mom to do my family, my MIL to seat my husband's family, and we obviously did our friends ourselves.

  • I also used Excel- if you know how to use it, it's easy. I just added a column for table number and started putting people together, then sorted by table number to be sure my counts were right.

    You'll be fine! :)
