Plus-Sized

My first dress shopping appointment!

Hi Ladies, I am new here. I just found this board and couldn't be happier about it.

I just scheduled my first dress shopping appointment! I am nervous and excited at the same time. I am worried that the store will not have many dresses that I will get to try on, due to being a plus sized bride. I am hopeful though!

Re: My first dress shopping appointment!

  • Hello!

You can always call the shop in advance to find out what sample sizes they carry - unless the store is known for their plus-sizes, I recommend it.  There are dresses that come in your size - I'm a size 28, and I found mine.

Wedding gown sizes don't always match street sizes.  That's normal.

If they don't have a plus-size sample of something you want to try, try on one that they do have, and have them pin the one you want over top.

Be open minded.  Often the most beautiful dress on the hangar will be utterly unimpressive on a person, while one you overlooked will be stunning.

Wear modest underwear and a strapless bra, if you have one.  If you know what shaping garments you'll want, wear those too.

If you have long hair, wearing it up is convenient, but bring a brush so that when you find one you like, you can see how it looks different ways.  It may help to wear the makeup you're planning on, but check store policy, because it can stain the sample dresses.  It may help to bring water, but again, check store policy.

    Good Luck!

If you haven't yet, check out the dress tips thread

It's got a lot of things that are helpful to keep in mind. For me, I only had the one appointment but for that one dress shopping trip, I made sure I had an appointment on a weekday, brought my mom and sister, called ahead to verify that they had dresses in my size to try on, made a list of model numbers from their website that I liked, and made sure not to try on anything that was not in my price range. If the salesperson brought me a dress that wasn't on my list of model numbers (which I knew to be in my price range) the price was my first question.

Be assertive if the appointment is not going your way- when I was starting my consultation, they put me in a dressing room that was the closest to the front of the store and I felt self-conscious knowing that anyone who just walked in the door of the store could see me. I asked to be moved before we even got started trying things on and it was no problem. They tried to put tiaras and such on me and I told them right away that it was not my style. Same thing with high heels.

And if you are allowed, bring a camera. It doesn't hurt to take pictures to review later, especially if you're not like me and don't find things in one trip, hah. When you've had one, two, three trips and have tried on over a dozen dresses, keeping some sort of record of what you've tried on and liked and why will be helpful! Have fun Smile

  • Definitely call the shop and ask what size range of samples they have to try on.  Bring a bottle of water and a hair tie - it gets really hot! I was sweating by my 5th or 6th dress.
