Lighting Budget

Our wedding is an indoor and outdoor event.  I have seen all these amazing pics of events that have some serious lighting effects.  I am looking for some leverage as I talk to vendors and get pricing.  Any ideas on cost cutting or effective lighting techniques.  I want to do things like a lighted monogram on the floor and the bar,  uplight coctail tables, and mood changing fades of colors in the pallett of the , purples, pinks, and blues.  I'd appreciate any advice and personal experience with lighting for events you have had so I can speak intelligently to these lighting vendors.

Your venue may have worked with a lighting designer before if they've ever hosted concerts or other theatre events, and they may get discounts. This is the case with my reception venue, and I'm so glad I went with them--they not only know my venue and how to light it up well, but my venue has already haggled with them for discounts, which means that I don't have to. I also agree with PP--lighting experts are artists who take pride in their work and will most likely want to make your event look great (at least, it's in their personal best interest to do so). They've probably gone into lighting as a profession because they've got a certain knack for making things look nice.

All that said, our lighting budget had to be upped after we figured out what we wanted--it's expensive! Not as expensive as flowers, mind, but it IS expensive. FYI.
