Donation to house of worship?

I'm trying to figure out how much we need to set aside to donate to our ceremony pastor's church.  Any guidelines out there?

Re: Donation to house of worship?

  • We have a 250 building use fee and a 150 donation set aside for our priest. Its a catholic ceremony.
  • I'd just ask the church for a rough guide. I'm sure they'd appreciate it. You don't want to show up with $200 if they're expecting more based on past donations.
  • I'd ask the church. Our church has a suggested donation of $200, plus we have to tip the priest.

  • The pastor is from seven different churches in PA(there are lots of little towns and he just drives from church to church to do services on Sundays and Wednesdays).  The area is very country and doesn't have a lot of well-off families so I'm guessing $200 would be appropriate.  I will ask FMIL, she has the contact info for the church.
  • We are paying the priest $400, the church $400, the janitor $25, $10/per altar boy and I don't know what the music fees are yet.

  • Definitely contact the church. Ours has set guidelines based on whether or not you are an active parishioner. I think it's $150 for parishioners and $300 for non? Also, are you getting married at the church or just using the pastor? Because I do think it's also customary to tip the pastor in addition to the church fee if you are using the actual church. That much I'm not sure on though...PM me if you're curious and I can see if my mom knows :)
  • We are not using the church.

The pastor is driving down from Pennsylvania to vacation in Myrtle Beach, SC for the week and then he's driving up to North Carolina(about 4 1/2 hrs) to do our rehearsal and ceremony that weekend and then he's driving back to Pennsylvania.
  • Our donation is not "suggested" so much as expected.  $750, if we don't want music.  So, it's roughly $1000.  Ahhh Roman Catholic churches......

  • My guess would be $150-$200 for him, plus travel costs - gas, wear & tear on his car, and a meal or 2 since he will be on the road for more than 9 hours just to do your rehearsal dinner.

I spoke to FMIL.  She said she would check with the church but that she's not sure that the pastor would accept anything for his travel.  He wouldn't take a free room in the rental house, either, opting for a hotel instead.

We will feed him and his wife at the rehearsal dinner, (breakfast at the hotel), lunch the day of the wedding, dinner at the reception, (Sunday morning breakfast at the hotel).

We will definitely offer and be prepared to pay for anything since he's going so far out of his way :-)
