So I have my tree up...

and that's about it.

I haven't sent any cards.  I haven't shopped for any gifts yet. I have one or two ideas but if I can't find what I want I am at a complete loss.   That will have to be today because I work tomorrow and Christmas.  My H works Christmas. My daughter and I are going to eat at his restaurant for Christmas with my BFF if she actually bothers to make it to town....she flakes 95% of the time.  My new family is JW and doesn't celebrate it.  The few family I have left, I have to mail stuff to, and they will never get it on time.

Is anyone else not really excited about Christmas, or am I the only one?

  • I'm not all that excited either. My dad and my brother both work offshore and they won't be home for Christmas. It doesn't really matter anyway, because we're doing Christmas with FI's family this year. But it does mean that my mom will be by herself, which really breaks my heart. And one of my mom's dogs had a tumor and had to be put down earlier this week, so I think she's pretty sad, though she's not letting on. I get along fine with FI's family and I really do like them, but my family is just way more fun.

  • I'm feeling kind of neutral on the whole thing. It will be great to see my family tomorrow, but there's a lot of infighting and drama going on right now with my mom & some of my sisters. I hope that nothing bubbles over (I'm usually the peacemaker).
  • I have friends here that are fun, but they all work xmas too.  So it is just me and my daughter unless my flaky friend from LA shows up.  Then I will be happy.

I just feel like hoildays bring a pressure to be so happy and I end up always being depressed.  Which is weird because even when my family was alive, someone would end up not feeling well and we would end up celebrating a different day, like maybe in January.  Half the time no one would cook and we would eat Boston Market.

I guess I am just stuck on the idea of xmas being a big deal, and it is not for me.

  • sasha, you and your daughter and H should make a new tradition and just not celebrate on the 24th/25th.

lauren, can your mom not come to your IL's? My IL's have come to my family's Easter get-together before. I would rather her be with me than sad all by herself.

ac, just yell, "You're upsetting the baby!!" if they try to start anything :)
  • Me too.  I've gotten some cards out, and that's about the extent of christmas for us.  We never bothered to put up a tree or decorations.  We don't really have money for presents, we're trying to save it for the wedding and stuff.  I figured I'd be working Christmas anyway, so I never bothered to get in the mood.  I'm not working Christmas afterall, but now there's a massive snowstorm coming tomorrow and Friday, so I doubt there will be any traveling for us.  We'll probably just whole up at home, maybe venture out for a Christmas drink and drive through the snowdrifts with the truck Cool.
  • Sascha, you have to work on Christmas Day?  That sucks!  When did retailers start doing that?
  • Georgia, I did check with the future ILs and they said they'd be more than happy to have her there. It's a four hour drive away from my mom and I asked her to come, but she said she wasn't up for making the drive :(

  • Sorry, Sascha, but I AM excited (remember you just got back from a week in Mexico). I want time off too.  Yay, time off!

Plus my tree is fantastic and we are eating a turducken on Christmas Day.  Nothing says celebration like a chicken in a duck in a turkey.  And football....so much good stuff.

    AW your tree.  Here's mine:

  • My mom is a JW so we haven't celebrated Christmas since I was in middle school.  I'm also working tomorrow and most likely on Christmas, so no you're not alone.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • That sucks, lauren. I can understand how she wouldn't really want to make the drive, but if I were her, I wouldn't want to be all alone. :(
  • I know smokey...it sounds horrible of me to complain.  Mexico was so relaxing and I am grateful I had the time off.  I don't mind working xmas day, I just get bummed about the family thing.

Georgia, even though my H is no longer a JW...he has some of the traditions stuck in his head.  He always gets me something, but his lack of excitement over holidays makes me less excited.  I guess we could do a yearly trip the second week of December and have that be "our holiday".  And my daughter and I can always go to a nice fancy dinner.

Amoro...the store I work at is in a casino.  Open until 11-12, 365 days a year.  It is actually a very busy day for us since the people who travel here have nothing to do and they shop all day, and the mall is closed.  So at least I know I will make good money:)

  • The good news though, is that the day my dad and brother get back from work, we're all going to be together. My bro's birthday is December 30th so we're doing dinner at a nice place. Then the next day is New Year's Eve, and I'm throwing a surprise bday party for my brother and the whole family and all of our friends will be there.

  • That sounds fun Lauren!  As long as you get to celebrate all together, that is what is important.

I need to get ready to leave my house and attempt to shop, so I will AW my tree tonight smokey.  Just you wait until you see my all time favorite ornament.  I have it front and center and it makes me smile.

  • I picture your fave ornament to be a Hot Wheels car, sasha, like the one that your H almost stuck in your butt that one time. Wasn't it a Hot Wheels car? That or a chihuahua (as a fave ornament, not a butt weapon).

Also, I pronounce chihuahua as "chi-hoowah-hoowah" in my head, as should you.

    Laughing

    Happy shopping!

  • Hahaha!!!  It had nothing to do with a car!!  That's how internet rumors spread!  That is so funny and cracks me up everytime.....I did however, wake up still drunk at 9am upside down on my bed next to a bottle of lube.  There was no car involved though:)  I think I said it as a joke...like in Jackass.  But then again I was pretty drunk so maybe it sounded like I actually found one in there.  :D

My favorite ornament is from my college days....it is Shaq when he played for the Orlando Magic and he is slam dunking.  My daughter was 5-6 and had a HUUUGE crush on Shaq.  I would catch her in her room watching basketball and shouting, "Go Big Man Go!".  So I bought it for her.  Her obsession lasted several years.  Pretty funny considering her other cushes were Zac Hanson and Seth Green...kind of different from Shaq.
Does she still like the Shaq ornament as much as you do, or is she mortified that you still hang it up?
    Posted by georgia_bride09
She loves it!  She is the one who put up the tree this year and she hung it right up front.  She claims she no longer has a crush on him, but I swear there is still something there.

He once did a magazine cover holding Cindy Crawford back during her crush.  I caught her crying and stomping on the magazine, saying how ugly she was and that she had a big pimple on her lip.  Then a few weeks later she did some MTV show and hung out with her other crush Hanson.

    She STILL hates Cindy Crawford.
