[QUOTE](chiming in late and against the grain here) I think this is largely a cultural thing. My Lebanese BIL will be late to his own funeral, by my family's "WASP" northern European-ancestery standards. What "we" (meaning my parents, siblings and I) consider a rude late arrival, my BIL and his family are somewhat taken aback at arriving within 45 minutes of the stated starting time. It is similar with my Venezuelan SIL. I suspect lyndausvi and Expatpumpkin can relate similar cultural differences. ETA, being a PW, I answered in both threads

I actually know a guy who was late to his own funeral. The turnout for the wake the night before was so big, that they decided to extend it until about an hour before the funeral was supposed to start. The hearse carrying him got caught in traffic and he was late to his own funeral. And he was just the type of person who really was late to everything when he was alive. His brother cracked a joke about it in the eulogy and it made for a really cool, light moment.

That's funny that's what I tell FI all the time. HE drives me crazy he's late for everything. So I usually lie about when we need to be somewhere.
