Not Engaged Yet

Official n00b post + ring shopping oooo shiny!

Sooooo I've been lurking for a while over here, giggling and such at all the smart, sassy, and sympathetic comments that all the lovely ladies have to say.  I've even made a few posts of my own so far, so since I broke my silence, I should introduce myself!

Tarra, 23, administrative worker bee and college student in Graphic Design.  Dating Evan, 26, aerospace hottie and PhD student at GT.  We met when he was interning in Huntsville last May and have been dating long distance since he left for the last two semesters of his grad classes.  He's done now and moved into an apt about 5 minutes from me while he works/Odd couple fact: our birthday is on the same day.  We are geek-a-licious.  We have matching glasses, his blue and mine pink on the inside.

So I swore off posting on TK message boards until we were closer to being engaged, and lets face it, when you've been serious for a while, NYE is a hard place to be!  (aka I need a vent!!!) But we went engagement ring shopping and have been talking about moving in together (which I said I'd have to be engaged before I'd do) and then he hinted that it might be sometime before fall, so it's no secret!!  I'm not "unofficially engaged" and I'm also not "unofficially pregnant" ... waiting on ring and marriage before those are official.  But really excited and... trying to decide about a center stone.

I want a really thin, plain white gold band and a center stone of either diamond or sapphire (which I have ALWAYS loved) with a halo of diamonds.  And I want a low setting... Ritanni has some really nice ones.  But I will love whatever the BF chooses, of course!!  I showed the BF a pic from the ring thread on Just Engaged and was really stoked about it, but he was kinda "eh, I'd have to see that in person" but he did say that he thought about a sapphire for me when the sales lady talked about it.  I think he's already chosen the store though!  The ladies there are so nice, knowledgable, and genuine.

Enough about that!  />^_^<  Happy to be here!  Love to hear what you knottie girls think about my diamond vs sapphire decision.  Does the sapphire sparkle?  That's what he's worried about I think.  ^_^;;

Well hello! I've seen you post a few replies and wondered who you are. Thanks for introducing yourself! :)

I'm totally traditional on the ring - diamond solitaire. No fancy settings. My only break from tradition is the cut - I like asscher or marquise. But if you like sapphires, go for it!

Welcome! I've always wanted a gemstone ring but recently decided that blue topaz is my favorite although I'll let BF make the final decision on the ring. I say if you like sapphire then go for it! They are beautiful.

Welcome! When it comes to diamonds, I like squarer cuts: princess, emerald, cushion, asscher, radiant. I also thought about a gem stone as a center stone (sapphire or ruby), but my BF was adament that he wanted to get me a diamond - some men are weird like that. I think sapphire engagement rings are beautiful, and if that's what you like, then you should get one! An e-ring is one of the most important pieces of jewelry you'll ever wear, so you might as well be happy, right?

    Welcome!

I'd lie if I said I didn't love my super sparkly diamond. Due to the dark shade of sapphires do they have tha ability to sparkle? I'm pretty clueless. I have a lab created blue sapphire, which I am sure has vastly different properties than that of a natural/ real sapphire.

Well, I think BF wants to get me a diamond, esp since the first ring I had (different man) was a CZ and I was disappointed when I found out it wasn't a diamond.

But I definitely like the round with a halo!  And low as possible!

This is the two that are inspirational!
    Ritani!  Yum!

Hello! Welcome! A sapphire won't refract light like a diamond will, but it will still be pretty. I'm boring and have a round solitare. I'm lame.

I kinda think that first one looks like a gear.

    Hello fellow Graphic Designer.

Just so you know, the lower the setting, the lower the sparkle-factor because it lets in less light to reflect.

But I do think those 2, diamond or sapphire, are very pretty.

Hi!  I think those rings are very pretty as well.

But Hetshup and Kat are both right.  Sapphires will not sparkle in the way a diamond will.  If it is cut well, it will have the really shiny, bright white flashes like a diamond, but not much rainbow sparkle.

And a diamond in a bezel/low setting might not sparkle as much as in other settings if light can't get in.  However, my sister has the three-stone version of the diamond ring you posted and it is amazing.  As long as the diamond is cut well, it will look great.

I agree with the other ladies if you are looking for sparkle go with the diamond and maybe get a sapphire ring for your one year wedding anniversary.  They are pretty cool rings.

Welcome! I have no opinion on diamonds or saphires really, or even the cut for that matter I just want one, my BF wants to pick one out on his own. I am happy to know that you are not unofficially pregnant.

All good suggestions!  and I'm a bit of a gearhead, so maybe that's what attracted me... but I don't want the glitsy band!  Just plain, and its hard to find!  It's like the ring people said "Hey, you don't want the catherdral solitare?  OKAY.  Have TONS of tiny diamonds everywhere."

I just want a little pretty!  And I just love the lower settings and A Jaffe + Ritani have some sparklicious options for the non-prong/cathedral type girls without sacrificing the sparkle -- http://www.pricescope.com/idealbb/files/AJaffe_MRS057_MES057.jpg teehee so pretty.  I just feel more comfortable with the lower settings... no offense meant to solitare girls... rock it!  It's silly but I feel like I'll put the man's eye out!

and aperitisa, love it!!  Good taste! Wink

    You will do well here.

I have concerns about a solitaire - afraid I will catch it on things - but I like the look best. Plus I just want a little one so they don't stick up so high. :) At this point I'd take apertissa's zip tie.

I think solitares are nice too, although I worry about the setting since I have to put on gloves all the time in the lab, and when Im not in the lab I am working with livestock and I worry about ruining it. I need a destruction proof ring (and it has to be yellow gold, for some reason my BF detests white gold)

I don't get the "newb" hate. Wasn't everyone a "newb" at one point? Or is it sort of a hazing thing?

Slowdancin - We get some really crazy people around here. (Anyone remember the girl who wanted to get married quick because she was pregnant and was afraid the baby would be "too dark" - proof the baby wasn't the guy's she wanted to marry?? That was special.) Sometimes I think the board gets too wrapped up in semantics - "future DH", "unofficially engaged", etc etc. These terms will bring on the wrath of the board. They don't bother me. People say much dumber things on the board!

And then the newbs that whine about no ring yet, ask the board how they should get their bf to propose, and then are ticked off when we ask if they've actually talked about marriage or we give rational advice.

So it's not ALL newbs. It's the crazy ones.

We all have our BSC moments. Just identify them as such in the subject or beginning of the post. Then we know YOU know you're crazy at the moment and we just talk you down instead of jumping on you. :)

I wish we had a where are they now post....

Did the crazy pregnant girl get married? Will the baby be "too dark" its like a bad soap opera. But now I need to know the ending...oh did she find that perfect maternity dress?

As everyone else has already said a sapphire isn't going to sparkle in the same way a diamond will - I have a lab-created sapphire and when it's all nice and clean it does sparkle some. And since I can't resist showing it off here's a pic

Welcome!  I'm also glad you're not unofficially preggers :-)  Since my ring is a sapphire and I love it to death I'm obviously biased.  I also think that diamonds are over-priced and tend to be ethically sketchy, but I know that's a sore spot for a lot of people.  Plus I have a ton of little diamonds in my ring so who am I to say anything?

Chipypony-  I wear gloves all day and then work with livestock, too, and after about a week with my e-ring I stopped ripping nitrile gloves and it no longer bothers me in work gloves etc.  I did bring a pair of nitriles to try on rings when we looked, though!  My ring was also too cheap to be worth insuring and FI and I agree that if it gets damaged (and we both know I'll destroy it somehow) we'll get over it.  Not to say that I'm not careful with my ring, like I said I love and I don't want to lose it!!!

Oh good...thats why I don't wear jewlery now, Im kind of rough on nice things like that. At least now that I am a graduate student I don't find my self sticking my hands in inappropriate places in a multitude of ruminants, when I get back on the farm it may be a different story...
