Flower Girl Options?

I already know I want my goddaughter to be my flower girl and we would like my fiances nephew to walk with her, he's only a few months older, but they will not even be two by the time of the wedding. Do I need another option instead of walking down the aisle like a wagon or something or do you think they'll be able to do it? The flower girls mom will be one of my bridesmaids, would it be rude to ask her to walk behind the two still in her dress and everything?

Re: Flower Girl Options?

  • Frankly, I'm of the opinion that unless one can get themselves down the aisle on their own, AND use words to describe their role, they're too young to be in the WP.

I'd leave them both out of the WP.  Have them dressed in adorable outfits.  Take a gazillion photos with them.  That will accomplish EXACTLY the same thing that having them as "flower girl" and "ring bearer" will.

They're not going to care if they walk down the aisle or not.  So to make life easier, I'd just skip it altogether.

    Good luck.

  • I think it is unrealistic to expect two 2 year olds to successfully walk themselves down the aisle.  I wouldn't do the wagon gimmick either.

Have an adult walk with them.

Or just list them in the program as flower girl and ring bearer, and include them in the formal photos, but don't have them walk down the aisle. They don't need to go down the aisle.

  • The only way the flower girl will walk straight down the aisle is if she sees her mom and runs to her... but aside from that, I would not be able count on a 2 year old to do anything.

I agree with Trix - take photos with them but leave them out.

Heck, our FG will be 4 1/2 and our RB will be 7 and yet we're not going to rely on them. It'd be cute if they do as they're told, but we're not holding our breath... they're people, not circus animals.

  • I had a friend who had her niece by the "flower girl" but was essentially just a "really cute little girl carried down the aisle." I think it's fine if you want to honor them by naming them as such, but don't expect them to truly do the role of flower girl. IN this instance, the mother was a BM and carried her daughter (only 1 at the time) down the aisle in her cute dress. It was cute, but she obviously didn't walk down throwing flowers or what not. So perhaps call her a flower girl, but don't expect her to actually do that job?

  • I have no flower girl. and my ring bearer is 2...will be 3 by the wedding. but when i asked him if he wanted to be my ring bearer he said yes on his own. he is fully capable to walk down the aisle and will walk. he is aware that there will be a lot of people in the church. granted kids have their bad days. but he is excited and can't wait to do this. my brother his god father will be at the front of the church so we have taught him to walk down the aisle to my brother. and yes we make sure we spend time with him frequently to know who we are so he feels comfortable around all of us the day of the wedding! we have also practiced and shown him what is expected of him even tho the wedding is 8 months away. we don't want any suprises for him. he is a very well mannered and behaved kid. very quiet and does as he's told. not saying any of yours are not good kids, because im sure they are.  buy my RB just has a calm temprament!
