Honeymoon Ideas Under $4000

Hello Everyone,

My fiance and I are looking to go somewhere outside the US for our honeymoon. We're getting married in late August of this year. Our budget is $4000. We don't want to go any place in the Carribean and I know our budget limits us on other places we can go. But I was hoping someone may have some oher options for us. Please let me know if you have any ideas!

Thanks!

Re: Honeymoon Ideas Under $4000

  • Why do you not want to travel to the Caribbean? The Caribbean is huge and there are lots of very unique options. You may be able to work Los Cabos out (Mexico) or Costa Rica.

  • Ireland?

For some good deals watch groupon, they have a lot of international deals available. Just make sure watch for travel date restrictions and before purchasing go to hotels website to check room availability for the time you would like to travel there. Also make sure to google the hotel for reviews.

  • I would suggest Ireland as well. FI and I have priced out a trip there for this August, and we think it will cost us in the $4000 range for 10 days. There are plenty of tours you can take that are a good bit less than that for 6 days or so.

  • i could list a ton of places but you need to give info on what you want to do. history? food? wine? international? domestic? fly? drive?

  • Hi, Thanks for responding.
We've been a few places in the Caribbean and would just like to do something "different" for our honeymoon. Something that wouldn't be a typical vacation for us. Also, FI isn't big on beaches, so that wou;dn't be our main goal.

We spoke with a travel agent that recommeneded Ireland as well. Do you have any ideas on what we could do there? We don't know much about Ireland, but we're open to visit any place we haven't been :-)

  • We'd like to go some place and basically be able to "live there" for 1-2weeks. So yes to almost all your questions :-) We'd like to go international (we're from Maryland), we love trying different foods, wines and beers, we'd prefer flying over a cruise and we'd like to learn some of the history wherever we go. Does this helo at all? Or am I still being too broad?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would suggest staying toward Galway if you want to "live there for 1-2 weeks." You would be close to many wonderful attractions, like the Cliffs of Moher, but also amidst a great Irish town with super friendly locals, Irish college kids, and classic Saturday morning street markets where you can pick up some pastry and cheese on the street. It's just incredible out there, and there are so many excursions you can do from that point.
If you don't want to drive, the train can get you anywhere, and you can do day trips or single over night trips to Dublin, Cork, Waterford, Donegal, Northern Ireland, ect.
If you like history - take an actual tour in Dublin and do the GPO, Book of Kells, the prison, and other historic-touristy things. Without the tour it's easy to miss things like the barracks still partially in tact, and the bullet holes that can still be seen in the walls. There's also wonderful monasteries to hike through. If you do go to Blarney, be careful, every single person in my group got sick from kissing the stone (though I still had a lot of fun doing it.)
In Northern Ireland, take a black cab tour. The history and current tension there is truly something to be experienced. The Giant's Causeway up there is also breathtaking.

Hope that gets you started - the Irish tourism site has TONS of information if you decide to go that route!

  • I went to Ireland last year and it was great! My travel agent lived there for 2 years and was able to give me great advice. I live in Baltimore, not sure what part of Maryland you are in, but I can give you her number if you are interested.
  • Hi, Thanks for the feedback! I live in Baltimore as well. Please send me her information!

[QUOTE]Cruise to Alaska. The scenery is spectacular, and guys love it! They sail from west coast ports like Seattle, Vancouver, BC, even San Francisco. Late August/early September is their final sailings before they reposition for the fall season, so prices are budget friendly. If you can do without the private balcony, you will save a lot. I like the cabins with a picture window. http://www.vacationstogo.com/fastdeal.cfm?deal=18112 http://www.vacationstogo.com/fastdeal.cfm?deal=14675 http://www.vacationstogo.com/fastdeal.cfm?deal=14675

  • We priced out 9-10 days renting a car and driving in a large circle from dublin, to waterford, to cork, to kilarney, to limerick, and back to dublin. The price is a bit high because we really want to stay in castles along the way, but there are many cute B&Bs that cost a lot less. Ireland is a good deal less expensive than the UK because Ireland is on the euro instead of the pound. It's also closer flight-wise. Fi and I can get flights from Atlanta around $700/each. They are probably less from Maryland since you are closer.

Our prelim plan is to do 2-3 days in Dublin, a day in waterford (crystal!), a day and a half in cork, 2-3 days in Kilarney to do the ring of Kilarney, and then maybe a day in Limerick. The nice thing about Ireland is that each of those cities is within a couple hours of the previous one, and most have castles in between. It won't be a super relaxing vacation since we will be driving the entire time, but we feel like that's the best way to see all the castles. If it doesn't work out this August, then we will go next August - our budget is still a little uncertain, and we won't know whether we can easily afford it until the wedding is over.

A couple links I found on trip advisor that are really helpful:

A free coupon that you can print out and get small discounts at many sites you would want to see (ie: waterford crystal factory, jameson distillery, guiness brewery, etc.). Click on the link that says "discount" to get the pass:

Also, a heritage pass that you can buy at the first national heritage site you visit. It gives you free admission into most of the public sites in the country for one year, particularly castles. If you or your FI are students, it's only 8 euros. The equivalent pass for London is 100 pounds, only works for that one city, and expires in 6 days:

4000 bucks you can go down to florida that's sure!
  • K so I love Ireland, and it is somewhat cheap to get to...but it is expensive as anything when you get there!!! I went to southern Spain with my boyfriend a couple years ago and did everything on less than $3k (including nonstop flights from Atlanta).

I think Europe in general is your best option because as in any urban area, there are thousands of hotels and B&Bs to choose from---which is fantastic in a budget-friendly honeymoon.

My choice? I'd recommend flying into London (cheapest flights typically) or going to Paris! Flights to Paris right now are for whatever reason, super cheap. Go to Kayak.com and play around with locations and dates.

If you want to do southern spain, check out my first blogs on WanderlustingFromAtlanta.blogspot.net. I gave an overview of our itinerary, what I would and would not do again. I absolutely loved Spain and with a few tweaks you can hit beautiful countryside drives, quiant villages, bustling cities, and gorgeous coastline.
