March 2012 Weddings

DJ/Money Frustrations (long)

Okay girls, I am so frustrated that I am almost in tears sitting at my desk at work.

As I mentioned before, we weren't planning on having a DJ of any kind and were just giong to do mustic ourselves on an mp3 player. Last week, though, we found out that it will be $425 to get sound equipment outside where our ceremony will be. Obviously we don't want to go without sound equipment because we want people to hear what's going on but that is a lot of extra money we weren't planning on spending!

Anyway, I decided that if we're going to have to spend the extra money maybe we should look into a DJ so we're at least getting a better value. Today I talked to a woman who comes highly recommended by other Knotties and she's willing to do the ceremony/reception for $900. FI is dead set against it, though, and keeps talking about how it's crazy to spend an extra thousand dollars.

I know it's crazy but I don't know what else to do!! Cut out the sound equipment at the ceremony? Just pay the $425 for equipment only even though we'll have to run it and will only use it for 30 minutes?

I'm just so over all of this! We're already over budget and I feel ilke we're so far in I just have to keep throwing money down the hole until we get there.  I don't even know what to do except sit down and cry which is obviously not helpful.

Anyway, if anyone has advice that would be awesome but I really just need to get this out!!

Re: DJ/Money Frustrations (long)

  • If that was me, I would look around for other DJ quotes...you may be able to get less than $900.

If not,  I would go with the sound equipment for the $425.00.  Will you be able to use it for the reception too?  Does it consist of speakers and microphone? If so, I would totally go fo it.  How were you planning for the MP3 player to be loud enough for the reception?  Sorry for all the questions, just trying to get an idea of what you were going for!

  • If your FI is so against spending the extra 475 (...bc you would end up paying the 425 for the speakers anyway unless you have an alternative for the music?), then let him take the reins on that and let him worry about the music situation :)

Also...I know we are cutting it close to the date, but have you explored other DJ options? Maybe less expensive?

Whatever you decide to do, please try to convey to your FI that music will be critical come reception time. I know with budget constraints its tough, but try to let him know how upset you are over this issue. Maybe y'all can compromise :)

  • I'm really sorry to hear about this..How many hours would the DJ be playing music?? Do they have a minimum?? What about looking at other DJ's, maybe you can find one that is within your budget...If you rent the sound equipment, are you able to then use it for the reception? I think $425 for 30 minutes and having to do all the work yourself isn't a good deal...sorry for all of the questions...

  • I'll say this... My wedding is in CT where everything seems to be ridiculously expensive.  I have come across several DJs for well under $900 that have also come highly recommended.  March really isn't a super busy wedding month either.  If I were you, I would be committing to searching high and low over the next few nights after work for a DJ that can come in under $700 for your ceremony & reception.  Ask your local board for suggestions or check out reviews on the wedding channel.  Send out emails to them ALL asking for their most competitive quote.  You already know you have to spend about $500 (I get it, that's already $500 you weren't planning on spending but it's a necessary expnse).. what would an additional $200 really do?  While I didn't spend a lot on my DJ (some girls on my local board spend thousands), I do know people say having a decent DJ can make or break your reception.  It will be worth the extra $ to have someone else handle the music and sound systems!!

Good luck and keep us updated... I really think everything will turn out fine!

  • Thanks girls, I'll try to answer everyones' questions!

First, I've gotten quotes from some other DJs and so far everyone is way more expensive but I am definitely still looking.

Second, The venue already has sound equipment set up in the reception space that we can use for our iPod for free, we just have to pay extra to get it set up outside for the ceremony space.

Three, The quiote the DJ gave me was for the ceremony (I think she factored an hour so she'll play music leading up to the ceremony and during) plus 4 hours at the reception (this is their minimum).

  • I agree with the other girls! I know your in a big city so that factors in, but keep looking for quotes. My DJ is $900 and I thought that was expensive. I know that my cousins got a dj for $300-$400. Maybe look outside the city limits for someone who would travel. Or for someone who is fairly new. Newbies can't often charge as much.

Have faith!! And don't just settle!
  • We priced out several DJs before settling on ours.  We ended up getting a break on price b/c March is a slow month for them.  I will say it was no where near $900 but we live in NE so things are usually cheaper anyway.  Can you see if anyone is willing to give you a bargin?

  • Have you tried Craigslist.  Sometimes college kids with equipment will do it for cheap.

This, but be sure to interview.

A good friend of mine had a backyard wedding in November and their original DJ had a terrible accident. Their replacement was a short noticed gentleman from Craigslist who blew. I mean like, awful. The groom's parents had to take over the DJ equipment bc he was clueless...and brought his brother who just drank all night.

Although not against Craigslist, definitely interview and check references! :)
  • Check out my FB and see the comments. There are some ideas on there. One guy did a direct link to his friend on there. My cousin Chris posted Todd Payne too - Here's his website - http://www.partytimetexas.com/ent_meetdjs.php

Hope this helps. I would check out the first guy if you could since he's not affiliated with a company. Maybe you can get him pretty cheap.

  • This is why I am sometimes glad I live in a small town.  The average price for a DJ around here is between 300-400 and that's for 3-4 hours.
  • Also, not sure if anyone mentioned it (didn't read through all post) but try checking out craigs list for an up and coming DJ.  The less experience they have, they less experience they have, the less money they can charge. Check around your local boards for any recommendations as well.  Good luck!
  • Is there a bridal show coming? We got our DJ and ceremony for $500 with a discount for a show booking. Try complete music they have a franchise in tx! cmusic.com

  • Ugghh that is such a bummer!! Sorry Elizabeth!!

I definitely agree with PPs though, keep shopping around. I'm SURE you can find someone that will do it for less than $900. Since you already have to pay $425, I think hiring the DJ is definitely worth it though. You won't have to worry about playing your own music, coming up with that large of a playlist, etc. It will be hassle free on your end, minus the fee part. Keep checking, I'm sure you'll come across something. Good luck and I'm definitely sending Knottie vibes your way!! :)
