I know there are alot of cat parents on the board, and I just heard today that Iams has done a voluntary recall. It's for some types of prescription cat kibble. Apparently there's some evidence of contamination with salmonella. I don't know if it's only in Canada, or if it involves the US as well.
Just FYI. Didn't want any sick kitties.

I thought they just had another recall last month or so.... that's what the guy at the pet store told me me when I went looking for my Purina One.

The thing to remember about recalls though is that they are voluntary and due to testing qualities. Normally the recalled product don't hit the shelves, but it takes a few weeks to get in new product which is why the shelves are empty. Most recalls aren't caused by sick animals, just by testing qualities being slightly off.
Except for the one in 07. That one was bad

I'm always amazed that vets recommend Purina or Iams as dog food. I mean, they aren't bad, but it's kind of like a doctor recommending you eat boxed dinners as a complete meal. I guess for most people it's the best they can/will afford though, so there is that.

Blue Buffalo is 6 stars, I believe.
Nope, Tank, Dozer (Siamese cats) and my new dog, Tori are all and only Science Diet. You could give me free IAMS for life now and I would just say no.

My puppy vomited yesterday and had explosive diarrhea all last night. It was a sleepless night, I think I will finish this bag and switch foods. Damn Iams.

[QUOTE]:( I heard the Purina One stuff was actually ok as far as dry dog food goes... now I feel bad. It's what they were giving him at the humane society, so we continued. I don't mind spending a little more on his food, but he's going be huge... as it is, he's eating about 3 cups/day. We tried the Science Diet stuff, but he wasn't a huge fan.

My dog eats 5 cups a day and he is not even 5months old yet. Good luck lol

<div>Yeah, ours is about 4 months old. You have a Great Dane puppy right? We met one at the dog park the other day, and he was HUGE. The owner said he had another one when he was a kid, and it gained like 15 pounds/week sometimes. eek!</div>

Yah i do. The biggest Dane i have ever seen was 220lbs and on all fours stood about 4inches below my armpit. I am only 5'4 but still! My dog gains about .5-1lb a day.
What kind of puppy do you have?

Ohh I have never threadjacked before, this is a break-through moment for me! Sorry.
Jelique, you give your dog adult food right?
Something I've suggested to customers at the store is to do half and half. Half high quality food, half what they are feeding now/economical food. That way they are getting better food, but it's not hurting the bank as much.
Purina isn't hurting them, it's just not as good for them if that makes any sense.

[QUOTE]Oh my goodness giant dogs! Have you talked with a vet about how much food they are getting or just going off the package? I only ask because the package said to feed Katie 4 cups of food a day, while the vet said she is not supposed to have any more than 2 cups, ideally 1.5 cups a day. It's a huge difference when it comes to purchasing more food. Then again, she's an old lady :) Something I've suggested to customers at the store is to do half and half. </div><div>Makes sense. The vet really recommended a "large breed puppy" food, and since he's doing ok on it and loves it, to just stick with what we've got. We were feeding him half/half with Science Diet and Purina One. The package says 2.5 - 4 cups and we're giving him about 3 cups. He's right on weight though :)</div><div>
</div><div>We'll look into trying another "good" food to split at least.</div><div>
</div><div>Thanks again for all of your pet wisdom!

[QUOTE]My dog is on Blue Buffalo. It's worth the extra cost. Jelique, you give your dog adult food right?

No giant breed proactive puppy food. He is still a baby, he wont be on the adult food until he is well, an adult lol.
Katie- I did lots of research on it and it says between 4 and 6 cups a day for a puppy. I am slowly increasing it because he is so skinny but i figure he is just growing so fast he cant pack on any fat I could give that dog a bag of food a day and he will still be skinny! haha.
If you have large dogs and the expense factor is preventing you from buying an upper level food, could it possibly be beneficial to buy some of each and mix them to offset the cost a little?
[QUOTE]I actually save money by feeding my dog high quality expensive food. She eats so much less of it because it is full of protein and nutrients and not just filler crap like a lot of the cheap dog food has. I feed my dog Solid Gold. I bought a large bag on petfooddirect.com and it has lasted about 3 months. The website always has coupons and specials running. Please check out the website that Heels posted. It has lots of good information. Remember that expensive doesn't always mean better, especially in the cases of Science Diet and Canin.

Exactly!!
I feed Taste of the Wild and I think it's pretty economical for being grain-free. I'd also recommend people check out the dogfoodanalysis website.
How many recalls will it take til people stop feeding grocery foods? <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-undecided.gif" border="0" alt="Undecided" title="Undecided" />
[QUOTE]Yeah,<strong> Science Diet is about the same level as Purina One</strong>. The Merrick I buy is the same price and it's much better. Did not know this. Thanks for sharing that link....
The price isn't really an issue; we just kept feeding him what the humane society had been. Since the vet said he was healthy and growing well, we figured the food was fine.
We'll probably be looking into other options once he uses up his 18 pound bag (in about a month or so. ha)
