DIY Dress Hangers

Since I can't stand when I look at bridal blogs and there's a picture of the bride's dress or bridesmaid's dresses hanging from plastic hangers, I was looking for some cute hangers. I thought about ordering the personalized wire hangers from ETSY, but they're so overdone and are $20 a hanger. I found this ides and it seemed like a project I could handle (LINK).

I bought 6 wood hangers (and made sure that they had the little notch to hang dress straps from), lightly sanded them to get the shiny finish off, and then painted them either ivory (for bridesmaid's) or Tiffany blue (mine). I bought small paint sample containers at Home Depot for $3 each (Martha Stewart Talc and Lagoon). I followed the instructions in the above link and added either Tiffany blue or White bows.

I'm really happy with how they came out, and they are so cute in person!!! Here's the pics:

I found the hangers at Bed Bath and Beyond : )

Ivory and Tiffany paint were from Home Depot and ribbon and black acrylic paint were from Michael's.

Its actually a project that FI could help me with...he is a Painter by trade!!

Just curious...where did you get the hangers...im thinking I could get them at Target...Yes??

Did you freehand the scrip?? Not too sure how I would do, but hey who knows!!

Haha! I might have to steal this idea too! Super cute! I agree..those wire hangers with the personalized names are getting to be overdone...although I still think they are adorable. But this is so personalized and not overdone. I love it!

The Target near me did NOT have the hangers. They had wood hangers, but they did not have the notches to hang the dress straps from. I ended up getting them at Bed Bath and Beyond. BBB had 2 different wood hangers with the notches for dress straps, one in light wood the other in a darker wood. I bought the lighter ones and just lightly sanded them to get rid of the shiny finish so that the paint would stick.

I did not freehand the script. I picked a pretty font and printed off the names. Then I followed the instructions in the link that I posted at the top to transfer the names to the hanger.

I didn't do anything differently than what was in the link except I painted the hangers first (the link just uses the natural wood) and I added bows. Before I painted the hangers, I taped off the metal hook so that paint wouldn't get all over it. Both the ivory and tiffany blue took 3 thin coats of paint to cover the hangers.

I think that I could have done a little bit better with the names, but the cheep-o paint brushes that I bought for the names were terrible. The bristles kept falling out LOL! That was the only annoying part of this project!

Those are super cute!! I might be stealing this too! The wire ones looked too involved for me, so I didn't really have an interest in going that route.

So cute! My sister order my wire hanger from Etsy as a gift. So I might do these and put in their "Bridesmaid Survival" totes as part of their gift. Our colors are navy and pink. So I'm thinking dark hanger, pink names, and navy ribbon.

I forgot to mention that I used wired ribbon to make the bows. I think it makes the bowes keep their shape better.

Now that I've made these, my mom wants a MOB hanger...which means I have to make one for FI's mom too! Luckily, the hangers came in packs of 5 so I have extra hangers. I have to buy more tiffany blue ribbon before I can make the MOB and MOG hangers.
