S/O Fondue!

MH - We have a fondue pot in our kitchen cabinet that we have yet to use. You have inspired me to give this a shot with DH tonight... Any recipes/seasoning combos you particularly like and want to recommend?

MA- I can totally give you some recipes from my book :)

I just use vegetable broth (neutral taste) with whatever seasonings.... usually a lemon-pepper blend I have which gives it some kick.  I usually cut up raw salmon, filet, chicken and shrimp (raw, uncut, tail/shell off), and some potato and broccoli and put it on a platter.  I also put out cocktail sauce, butter, teriyaki sauce, etc in ramikens for dipping after it cooks. Since I always keep meats and shrimp in the freezer, it's a pretty cheap meal to pull together... but if you have to buy all of the stuff it can add up, so you may want to have just 2 proteins or something.

Yea, I'm thinking we'll limit it to whatever 2 we have in the house... I'm off to find a good broth recipe. Thanks!

We bought one for my mom for Mother's Day a few years ago. She never used it and gave it back to DH and I when we moved into our house. We have also never used it. Until Now!

They should be relatively cheap like B2B said.  I got mine from Target, and I bought one for my cousin at BB&B.

oooo...Thanks girls! I'm seeing if FI wants to do this. We might have to head out to BB&B (and Target is right next to it in case we don't find anything) tonight. Of course now the problem is I have an hour till lunch and I'm starving!

We got a fondue pot as one of the first items off our registry.  we tried to make a chocolate fondue and were very excited. But the chocolate burnt and it was gross and we have never tried again.

You have to use a different chocolate (not just regular chocolate chips) and usually add a cream in there to moisten it up.  You also have to keep the temperature really low.  I did it once, but cleaning up the pot was a PITA, so I haven't done it again.

I'm pretty sure target and BB&B have the melting chocolate, but I could be wrong.

MH - thanks, I do want to try it again.  I used chocolate wafers last time, becuase I've used those for melting and making chocolate bars before.  But I didn't add cream.  I also admit that I can be VERY impatient and I may or may not have jacked up the temperature because I wanted it to melt faster. ;-)

I have to admit that I cooked all my meats at high temps because I was impatient until I relized that I was drying them out that way... which took a few years.  We're all learning :)

Yea the trick with chocolate is to warm it up to melt, not to cook it.

maybe use a double boiler to melt it and then put it in the fondue pot to keep it melted.
