Fun activities for 10 and 7 yr olds

One of my nieces turning 10 in March and H and I want to take her out.  We have no idea what would be an "age appropriate" activity for a 10 year old. I honestly can't believe she's 10 already.  I have another neice who is turning 7 in a few days and H and I also want to do something with her.  I was good at thinking of stuff when they were really young but now I don't want to take them to something that is to "young" but at the same time I don't want to over do it. I'm totally lost, any suggestions would be awesome.

  • I would probably let her pick the place. They love getting their toes done, and eating out.

  • Yes, toes.  I took my niece for her first pedicure when she was 9 or so and I created a monster.  Her mother still hasn't forgiven me.

Is there a children's theater near you?  I remember going to a play for children with my aunt when I was about that age and loving it.

  • Movies, bowling, zoo

NOLA's idea is good.  We have an indoor "bounce" place with all the inflatable games (jousting, sumo wrestling, bunge run) that is over run with kids that age.  Is there something like that in your area?

  • I used to love going to the Science Center where they had a huge children's activity center. The three level indoor jungle gym was also a top choice thing to do.

If you really aren't sure then ask. I can also remember loving when it was my choice where to go or what to do.

  • Zoo, science museum, toy museum, movies, indoor splash park, bouncy places. Bowling! My daughter loves bowling.

Don't take them for pedis. They're too young.

Paint-your-own-pottery, mini golf, go-karts, one of those "fun centers" that has all the activities inside, plus arcades; Home Depot or Lowe's kids' workshops; storytellers at the local library.

Our local art museum has a whole kids' section and activities you can do with kids throughout the museum. An aquarium, if you have one; an historic village, if you have that nearby. Theme restaurants are always fun, but not really an activity.

Even the airport might be cool. DIA has a scavenger hunt you can do: you download the list from their website and wander around the airport, looking for the stuff. Yours might have something like that.

Most police departments and fire departments will let you make an appointment for a tour with kids. Local factory tours and stadium tours are a favorite of ours. Oh, and most state capitols can be toured for free.

Nature walks, scenic drives, local tourist attractions (historical points of interest, etc.).

Surely something in there will appeal to them better than being little ladies who lunch. ;)

  • Ask the kid.  My 10 yo self would have hated toes, but the zoo or science center were AWESOME.  My parents have a tradition that when a grandkid turns 10 they get an overnight with the grandparents.  They do one activity of the kid's choosing- bowling, art museum, putt-putt, movie, zoo, science center.  Then they go out to dinner do a little shopping for an outfit then they curl up in grandma's bed and watch movies.
