Outdoor Weddings

How far would you travel?

We are having a beach wedding. We are only inviting close friends & family (aunts, uncles, first cousins, etc.). Our destination is approx. 2-2.5 hours away from where most of them live.  We are going to set up a group rate at a couple different hotels for people.

Just curious if that seems like a long distance for most people to travel? Obviously wouldn't need airfare or anything but how far is too far?

I know nearly all of MY family will come, but not sure about HIS family...

Thanks in advance!

My family actually has weddings in a small neighbouring city about 2 hours away on a regular basis (some family members live there).  It's not a terrible incovenience at all - we view it moreso as a little weekend getaway since the area is far more touristy than the city which we live in.

Blocking the rooms or providing a group rate is a great idea.  We normally go down the night before the wedding in order to make it a true weekend getaway but some family members make the drive the day-of.

    Good luck!

Edit: It should be noted that  I live in Canada and driving 2 hours to get somewhere is nothing.  We do more than that to get to the cottage every weekend so it is not abnormal for us.
  • I would be more than happy to travel just 2-2.5 hours for a wedding.  Its fun to get out of town, but not be too far away.  Most weddings I've attended have either involved a flight or a very long 6+ hour drive.

  • I wouldn't mind at all, but I would have problems if it was, say a friday night or sunday night.

  • I think it really depends on the people, but I personally wouldn't mind at all.  I think of 2-2.5 hours as a completely reasonable day trip.  Heck, I drove 18 hours for a wedding last weekend for my best friend.  I think the people that care about you will be happy to make a short drive to attend your wedding, especailly if they have the option of a low rate on a hotel for those that may not want to drive home after the wedding, or drive there in their wedding clothes.

  • The majority of people attending our wedding had to travel at least that distance.  I figured if people really wanted to come, then they would.  The majority of wedding's I've been to in the past couple of years I had to fly.

  • That close, I would probably just drive home that night, no problem, but then again, I don't really have the desire to drink much.
  • I drove four hours to one of my best friend's weddings this summer. Granted, we were there for the whole weekend, but I would have driven the eight hours there and back just for one day if I had to! Your family won't mind driving two and a half hours, I'm sure! :)

  • 2.5 hours is not a long travel to  me for a wedding.  I would seriously put thought into having to fly for a wedding, but 2.5 hours is not bad.  If your family feels its important enough, then you shouldn't have an issue traveling that far.
  • I drive 2 1/2 hours every other weekend just to go hang out in my hometown. haha. I would most definitely drive that to go to a wedding! =]
  • I agree with everyone else - 2-2.5 hours isnt bad.

We invited all family (100+) people and many friends (100+) for our wedding - all of them will have btwn a 5-6 hour drive and about 50% of them are coming - those that care, will do their best to be there :)

  • I drove 4 hours for a baby shower (after spending the night singing in a band until 2am), stayed 2 hours, then drove 4 hours home to attend a 50th birthday...

I also drove 4 hours for the baby's christening and back the same day because I had to work the next day...

I would say that 2.5 hours for a wedding is nothing!
  • I am having a destination wedding in the Caribbean. We have 42 people flying from California and Massachusetts. So I dont think 2-2.5 hour drive is too much! Good luck!!
