Do you remember where you were when 9/11 happened?

I was in high school, where a large proportion of the students had parents working in the WTC. After we got out, we all went and saw the smoke rising from across the river.

I was in high school. It was passing time and someone said "A plane just crashed into the World Trade Center." We didn't think much of it, until we were watching on TV during Oceanography class and saw the second one. We ended up getting out of school early that day...but I don't really knwo why.

My mom woke me up a little bit early and said come, watch the news, somethings happened. So I sat there and drank my hot chocolate watching in shock. Then I kep the tv on the whole time I got ready and the radio the whole way to school. At school we watched tv and listened to it in some classes. I was in...9th grade?

I'm going to cry talking/ thinking about it. I get soo emotional with stuff like this.

I can't even imagine being that close to it, April.

It was during homeroom in high school. I remember the other teacher came RUNNING into our room screaming that we needed to turn on the tv. I sat there, watching the video footage (just in time to see the 2nd plane.) I *knew* it was horrible, even though I really couldn't understand what was really going on yet.

First week of my first year of college... I was in Expository Writing through the whole attack and nobody came to tell our class what had happened... we switched to third period at 11:10 and that's when I heard that classes had been canceled, and what happened. I spent the rest of the day in the dorm with my new roommates, watching it over and over on the TV while fighter jets flew overheard (I went to Rutgers, so pretty close - close enough to see smoke from the high floors of our dorm). That night, I went to mass.

Vividly. I was getting ready for school and my mom called me into her bedroom to see what was going on, I think both towers had been hit at that point and I didnt really grasp what was going on. As I walked to school it started to sink in what was happening and it was just so surreal for the rest of the day. NO ONE knew what was happening except for teachers and people with first period spare (which I had) - One person I went to school with was sent home because he was harassing the principal to announce what was going on and she wouldnt. It was just such a scary day. No one knew what was going on, what was going to happen next or how it could happen. I will never forget the day and the aftermath.

I was a senior in HS about 25 minutes outside of NYC. I remember someone came in saying a plane hit the WTC but nobody thought it was any kind of attack. It wasn't until I got to my next class and we turned on the TV and the 2nd plane hit that everything sunk in.

My dad, on the other hand, had just made it to his office 4 blocks from the WTC when the 1st plane hit. He watched the entire thing from his office. I can't even imagine. I remember trying to call him at lunch but I couldn't get through. Luckily my mom had heard from him. His usual subway stop was the WTC, but amazingly he went into work early that day.

I was a sophomore in high school, and we first saw it during math class. I remember all the teachers had the TV on during the day, but when we got to English, our teacher scolded us for not focusing on school and tried to teach a lesson. It was kind of f'ed up, in retrospect.

Umm yeah. AP US History class in high school. Our teacher wouldn't let us watch until we said that we'd all walk out unless she did. We figured since it was US History class and this could potentially be the defining moment of our generation and all the principal wouldn't mind much when we stopped by his office on the way out to explain why we were leaving. One of my classmates lived across the street from the school, we were planning to head to his house to watch.

I was on my way to class (college) and had a view of the city. No one had any idea what was going on and classes were still in session, but rumors were flying. At one point, people were saying the Pentagon was on fire and the President was dead--it was really scary. The worst part was driving home because they started to close all of the highways by us and I genuinely didn't think I'd be able to even get home.

It was really terrible being so close by--literally everyone had a friend or family member who worked in the WTC or right nearby. Even to this day, we always remember. Just yesterday we were taking pictures for the wedding I was in, looking at the skyline and seeing how different it is without the WTC.

I was a senior in HS and was in study hall in the library where CNN was always playing. So I knew about it immediately and watched the second plane hit live. I remember thinking what an awful accident it was until the second plane hit. We watched coverage in every class that day and the next few. I am in NY but upstate and there were still so many connections - kids being called down to learn if aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. were okay. We had a pair of twins who were freshmen at the time who lost their older brother. He worked in the WTC. (Sadly one of the twins passed away two years ago in a car accident) I can't imagine being downstate like you, April. There must have been so many families who lost people.

My cousin worked in the Pentagon at the time so that was scary but we learned pretty quickly that he was okay.

This is so interesting. I've heard stories where people weren't allowed to watch the coverage in school. I feel lucky to have been able to watch everything all that day and week. I guess it must have been a school decision and I'm glad they decided that way.

Sleeping, for both towers. And then I went to class and the teachers weren't allowed to turn on TVs or radios, I guess because it would damage our poor Jr. High brains or something.

I was in freshman earth science when I found out. The bell had just rung and we were packing up our things when someone ran into the classroom and said something. When we got to second period, history ironically, we only had the tv turned on for about 10 minutes until the principal made an announcement that he didn't want people watching. I am pretty sure no one listened to him, except for my teacher. He was a douche.

ETA- I don't remember if I found out after the first one had hit, or if they had both been hit yet.

I will never forget that day. I was at work and my boss' wife called looking for him and told me to immediately turn on the television. We all surrounded the tv in time to see the second plane hit. I think I went numb at that point as a guy I had just begun dating had been traveling for work between Boston and NYC. When he was in NYC, he would have been in the WTC. Fortunately, he was in Boston and safe. Also, a co-worker of mine was in NYC and we couldn't reach her for two days. It was so incredibly scary and I can't even imagine what it would have been like to actually have been there.

I feel bad about that morning because at the time I was getting ready for work and I was on the phone with a close friend of mine. My friend is a pilot on the side and he doesn't have the best vision, so before the second plane hit, and of course before knowing how serious the impact to the first tower was, I said to him man someone up in New York must have vision as bad as yours, he just crashed his plane into the world trade center. At the time I thought it was just a little Cessna or something like what he flew; no idea it was a huge jet plane, etc. Then of course the second plane impacts and I'm like holy sh*t, something really serious is going on here, and the news was starting to catch up with the reality of the situation at that point so then it all set in.

My english teacher studied terrorism or something in university and she went out and bought a tv and wire thingy so that we coudl watch it in her class room. She didnt teach anything that day and let anyone who wanted to watch, watch. I spent most of the day in there.

I was at home sick from elementary school. Grade 6 I think. My cousin was watching the news after the first tower was hit and I was standing in front of the TV reading the screen when the second tower was hit. I remember starting to freak out. I can't even imagine seeing it or actually being affected by it.

Second period, second week of senior year (hs), painting class. We heard over the PA that a plane had hit the WTC, and we were all shocked, thinking it was a big mistake. We worked until the end of class, and then the PA buzzed again and they told us about the second plane. Then it started to sink in. They ushered us all down to our respective gyms and hooked up the TVs, and the principal came on to tell us what had happened. He was watching CNN as he was doing the announcement, and his face went white just before the channel switched to footage of the first tower falling.

My ex-boyfriend was sitting on the next set of bleachers, and he collapsed upon hearing that the tower had collapsed, because both his parents worked there. I didn't know what to do, I felt so helpless. We hadn't spoken in years, really, and his new GF was sitting nearby (doing nothing), but all I wanted to do was go over and hold him and try to comfort him. I didn't, and I still regret that. His parents were fine, though. They were stuck in traffic in the Tunnel.

I remember the rest of the day we watched the towers fall over and over and over until I lost it in my Creative Writing class and stormed out. I spent the remainder of the day, in all of my classes, sitting in the hall. I was just so angry.

That weekend, I went with a bunch of my best friends up to Eagle Rock Reservation, which is this little scenic overlook about 10 minutes from my childhood house, that looks out over the NYC skyline. People had stuck letters, candles, drawings, prayers, whatever, to the walls up there. Some of them were heartbreaking. We became part of the team that went up there every other day to relight the candles. There's now a huge memorial up there, but I'll always remember all the drawings and poems by little kids. They were the most heartbreaking.

I don't know if tonight's events will be burned forever in my memory, but I'm fairly certain that you could surgically remove my brain and I would still remember 9/11.

A moment I'll never forget was maybe a couple days afterward. We were having candlelight vigils in every town and everyone had a flag on their car. I was driving down the highway, when we hit a wall of traffic--there were literally hundreds of motorcylces, all driving in a procession with flags in honor of the victims.

As I was sitting there, a motorcycle drove up next to me and the people pointed to the little flag on my antenna and gave me a thumbs up sign. It was such a sign of solidarity, a "we're all Americans in this together" moment that I'll never forget. I just sat in my car, crying and even now I get choked up thinking about it.

I got on the bus at 7am (I lived really far from my school) and as I was getting on the bus my bus driver was crying and told my mom and I what happened. I got to school, I was in 7th grade and we watched it all day long. I just cried and cried. I had never heard the word terrorism or even knew what it meant. Looking back I wonder why our teachers let us watch all of that at such a young age.
