Marriage Laws/Ordination

We are having a hard time finding someone to marry since we are living together. Neither of our pastors will marry us because of this. I know we can have a JOP marry us but my cousin has volunteered to get ordained online and marry us. My question is, I live in Wisconsin (Dodge County) and he lives in Michigan. Will he legally be able to marry us because he is from another state?

Re: Marriage Laws/Ordination

 • Call the clerk of the county where you plan to get married and ask 1) if WI authorizes those ordained online to conduct legally recognized weddings and 2) if your officiant is required to be a resident of your state.
 • Yep, call the Clerk of court (the county where the ceremony will take place)first. The Clerk should be able to answer your questions and/or tell you where to look. Some States/ Clerk offices even have plamplets to help people understand the marriage laws. You can also double check what the clerk tells you by pulling up your state's statutes to confirm.

 • You may be able to find the information online on your county's webpage. Usually the Clerk of Courts has a "marriage laws" section with Q&A, and it will usually cover the requirements of a legal marriage in your county and state. If you can't find what you need, then at least you'll be able to find their phone number to give them a call:-)

Make sure that when you contact your municipality, you tell them which online ordination service your cousin is using. Some jurisdictions have specific exceptions for certain "churches" (like http://www.themonastery.org/ ).
