DJ Costs?

I've been debating on whether to do an ipod reception or to get a DJ, but I honestly have no idea what a DJ would cost. Any help here would be greatly appreciated as I am clueless. 

Edit: We would have money in our budget, but FI and I aren't really into popular music, which is why we were thinking of going the ipod route, but I am kind of nervous about things not going smoothly.

    I would do a dj over an ipod for the simple fact that it is a real, live person there.  Are you planning on using anyone for introductions, announcements, etc?  Our dj did a great job to make sure that the whole night flowed smoothly.  Plus, their job is to play to your crowd.  I would recommend contacting Brad with Queen City DJs or Mark McFadden.  Both do a really great job!  I would say average pricing I found is around $600-800.  Brad was around $700-800 and Mark was a little more pricey, but I have seen both in action and they both do a great job and neither are cheesy.

    I am using 513DJs/Kellinghaus Entertainment and got a great deal. They had a $100 off discount advertised, so I got 5 hours for $574. I also found that if you get quotes from various DJs and wait a bit, they will contact you to see if you booked with anyone yet and usually offer more discounts if they are trying to fill that date. It pays to shop around though.

    I am using Brad with Queen City DJs and it is costing about $1000.  With him you can select what songs to play throughout the night on a website he has set-up.

    We are using a friend that my FI works with who does DJ on the side. He is only charging us $250 for the night. If you are interested I can get his information for you. I think he would probably charge you around $350 or so.
    As far as the Ipod idea..It seems like it would work fine, but as pp noted you have to remember that the DJ announces things like dinner and dances, etc. So you would have to have someone to do that for you.

    My FI and I were also considering going the ipod route because we weren't looking for the typical wedding music and DJ. But after considering the logistics ie. making announcements, keeping things on the time schedule, changing music for the first dance, reading the crowd, etc., we decided we needed some sort of professional.  
    So we overlooked the wedding DJ's online and looked for someone who actually DJ'ed at bars or events around Cincinnati.  My advice, consider asking a DJ you like at your favorite bar or nightclub, their price may surprise you (mine is only charging $300, significantly less than any wedding DJ I found), and they probably have done at least one wedding in the past (so they know the logistics). 
    If you decide to go with the ipod, I'd ask someone not invited as a guest to your wedding (with an outgoing personality and similar taste in music as you), if they'd act as an announcer.  I've heard this can work! HTH :)

    I am using DJ Butlers and it is only $450 for all 5 hours. We had to take someone a little less experienced for this price but they go through 6 months of training before they can even do a wedding on their own so I trust they will do fine. Plus I am pretty sure they will get songs for you if they don't have them. I have to say that an ipod reception sounds great in theory until there is any kind of issue and then who will fix it? I like the comfort of not having to worry about the music at all.

    Logistically, I would get a DJ so you don't have to worry about the reception running smoothly. It's the DJ's job to make sure things flow, keep things moving during the ceremonial parts, and to let your guests know what's going on. I think the money you'll spend will be worth every penny to take away all those headaches on the big day! You  have enough to worry about.

    Unfortunately, the DJ we're using doesn't do weddings anymore.. it's more of a friend-of-a-friend favor he's doing for us. I'm sorry Frown
