Getting the dress from point A to B

So I'm having the wedding in my home town which happens to be a 6 hour plane ride away from where I currently live. I need to figure out how to transport my dress in the safest way. I don't want to check it as luggage but I'm afraid that if I take it as a carry on in a garment bag it may have things piled on top of it the the overhead bins.

If anyone has been through this before I'd really appreciate any advice!!!

Thanks :)

Re: Getting the dress from point A to B

  • Often airlines will let you bring your dress on the plane as a carry on and let you store it in one of their closets (full length - so that it won't have to be folded).  I would call your airline and let them know the situation and they should be able to work something out for you.  Good luck!
  • Ditto Kaye.  I've read about a lot of girls who the airlines let put their dress in a closet.  I also suggest calling ahead and seeing if that will be a problem.
  • Ditto pp's. When we went on our honeymoon, there was a bride-to-be bringing her dress on the plane, and they let her store it in the closet in first class.

  • When I had to deal with this I called my airline and they told me that they can't guarantee they could put it in the captains closet.  They said if there wasn't any room in there and the flight is booked (which it usually is, meaning there's not much overhead room) they would have to check it at the gate.  Make sure you talk to your airline about this!

I ended up shipping it, insured, with UPS to my parents.  It arrived in two days and my parents had it pressed and waiting for me when I got there.

  • I agree about having it shipped UPS or FedEx.

I've traveled with instruments before. Same idea--they didn't fit in the overheads due to being oddly shaped. 2 out of the 4 times, the stewardesses put it in their closet for me. The other 2 times they insisted that I gate check my horn right there.

ONE of the times I gate checked it, the morons working with luggage didn't get it off the plane like they were supposed to..they had intended on sending it to the baggage spinners. Apparently they'd missed the bright pink GATE CHECK tag. After I firmly explained my situation to the pilot he LUCKILY was able to talk to luggage about getting it back up to the gate.

Since your plane ride is 6 hours, I assume you will be stopping for a changeover at least once. If this is the case DO NOT GATE CHECK--something could happen like happened to me and they could send it to the luggage spinner things.

So if you want to take a 50/50 shot with your dress being mangled then possibly destroyed or lost, then go for it. Otherwise, ship it with insurance in a well packaged box with plastic around the entire dress.
  • I flew home with my dress, from one small airport to another and on a not-so-busy flying time (middle of the day on a Wednesday or something, I think). The planes I was on didn't have closets, but one let me hang it on a coat hook in first class, while the second flight was empty enough that I put it in an overhead bin with nothing else up there.  If you try to carry-on, make sure you don't have any other carry-ons except a purse, and talk to the people at the gate as soon as you get there.  Also, don't be shy about it beng a wedding dress - people love weddings.  usually.

  • I had to fly with my dress as well.

I took it as a carry on, in addition to my purse. They did not have a closet on the particular plane I took; however I was able to lay it flat in an overhead bin, no problem. I laid it on top of some other bags, etc. It arrived without wrinkles or any other issues.

However, this was traveling in Canada. Not sure how the new security guidelines might affect carry on's for you - you should definitely call ahead and check with the airline beforehand.
  • Thank you for all the advice. I'll do some poking around and find out what Southwest Airlines will be able to do for me.
