Snarky Brides

What's With the Chair Covers?

I hate to post and run - but I've been pondering this question and I'm hoping SB will have an appropriate (or at least entertaining) answer.

Why are the "Budget Brides" so obsessed with chair covers?  Every third post is about chair covers and how do I find cheaper chair covers and OMG the chairs are metal or brown or green or chipped or whatever.

please esplain.

  • When they're truly ugly, yes. We visited my sister's venue today - they had it set up with the linens they provide, which didn't include chair covers. The fact they were missing really brought down the whole look of the room. They really were that bad.

  • East I love your tea cozy picture.  But I find it disturbing when I imagine the tea cozy talking as you.

I think the obsession with chair covers comes from the venue having icky chairs and trying to find a way to change icky chairs without shelling out a ton of money to rent other chairs.

The chairs at my venue are nice but they are black but my entire scheme is an icy white.  I'm debating if its worth the cost of renting silver chairs; however, with my guest list almost doubled I'm not so sure about it anymore.
  • I like chair covers if they are tasteful and blend into the room as a whole.  But when people decide that because their colors are white and bright teal that they need 165 bright teal chair covers?  Ouch.

If the chairs aren't that badly noticable to begin with I think chair covers are a silly exspense.  I'd rather sink that money into the bar or food, but to each their own I guess.

=) If FI had his way the entire budget would be spent on food and alcohol.  We've already upgraded to an open bar for 7 hours.....yet he wants more.  I think people won't be able to walk after our reception.

A lot of budget brides have their weddings at places like church reception halls and recreations centers- which sounds like a great way to save money. I would assume, though, that the chairs may be ugly, or just the folded metal ones. It would make sense to buy cheaper chair covers to make the venue look nicer.

I think chair covers are unnecessary and just another high maintenance wedding expense (waste of money) that people indulge in.

Agreed.  So they are basically the antithesis of a budget wedding.  Which I think was the OP's point.  I couldn't tell you what the chairs looked like at any wedding I've ever attended, mine included.

  • I always wonder in the back of my mind if the people looking for chair covers are the same ones saying they have a cash bar or asking about tiering the reception.

I can't stand the look of chair covers and would rather see a gray metal chair, but I suppose most people feel differently.  We ended up with free chiavari chairs which was good, because otherwise we would have had to shell out extra money so it didn't interfere with the bar.  The were the venue's chairs that we had to rent though, so they were cheaper than chair covers before we got them for free.
  • My mother thought that chair covers made a room "look finished".  So we're having them. Even though I don't like them.  Ours came in a package with the other linens from the caterer, thank goodness.

Some people like the look of a fully fabric covered room.

If you're not screwing over you guests to have chair covers, cool have them.  But if you're going with the cash bar so that you can save the money to cover your room in fabric you're priorities are seriously messed up (it does not sound like you are screwing over your guests for the sake of chair covers so this is a general you.).  If you're trying to throw a budget wedding there are much more important places to spend your money.

    Thanks for this part.  ;)
  • One venue we visited had disgusting chairs... I'm talking the cheesy wooden metal hybrid with the wood chipping off. They wanted $5 a chair to cover them... seriously $750! I could see if they were nice chairs but those chairs would have snagged my dress. I didn't like the place anyway so I was kinda glad that the $750 to cover their ghetto chairs is what took them out of the running for Superdaddy.
  • I probably wouldn't have had chair covers except they came with the venue.  They also weren't those god awful white things with a big bow.  They were black spandex and looked sort of cool.

  • I'm really bummed at what the Budget Bride board turned into.  It wasn't around when I was planning and I thought it was such a good idea, but really it's like the Cheap Tacky Brides board.  It seems like cash bar and tiered receptions are brought up a lot over there, and if you try to correct them, they act like you just don't understanddddddddd because you had a platinum wedding or something.  Um, no.  I had a budget wedding, too.  I just did so without being rude to my guests.

  • Um, I am someone who totally notices ugly chairs. This was actually important to me, when I picked my venue I looked to make sure the chairs were nice enough without chair covers. And some budget reception venues have really really really ugly chairs. They hurt to look at (and sit in, not that the covers fix that). Or, they have plastic garden chairs they want to pretend actually belong inside at a dining table. I think chair covers are a necessity at some locations.

Aren't chair covers just like tea cozies?  Using that logic, the origjnal poster that you thought was obsessed with chair covers is in fact, obsessed with tea cozies.

  • I don't think they are ever a necessity.  Necessities include oxygen and water and shelter.  Chair covers are pretty low on that list.

Like others have said, if it's something you feel passionate about and you can cover the cost of chair covers without taking something away that your guests will actually care about, then by all means, knock yourself out.  There's no need to get defensive unless you are having a cash bar or serving crackers, cheese, and punch to cover the cost of them.  And if your'e doing that, well, nothing you can say is going to convince the rest of us that that's not douchey.
