Legal Name change after marriage

so I would like to know if anyone can tell me what I need to do.

So I go by my middle name, let's say for instance my name is

Mary Jane Doe and I go by Jane, well let's then say I marry a jones.

my name becomes Mary Jane Doe Jones, I want to drop mary and just be Jane Doe Jones.

I'm told I have to do a legal name change, but I'm not sure what all I will need to do to get that done?

My hubby does not want me to hyphenate it either.

any  help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

It's hard.  I have been considering a legal name change to Kate from Katherine for years because I always get called Kathy/Kathleen/Katie/Caitlin and it drives me absoultely insane!

I'm not sure if you do your last name due to marraige and another change to your name if you can do it in one process but here if what I've found for a non-marraige name change: http://www.ehow.com/how_4499134_legally-change-name-pennsylvania.html

I'm getting married this friday- if you figure anything out PLEASE LET ME KNOW! Good Luck!

If I were you, I would just call my local conty orphan's court (or whoever handles name changes after marriage) about this.  As I understand it, in PA this may be more complicated than just a last name change...you may need to do a formal hearing with a judge.  It can't hurt to take five minutes to just call and check with a pro, though.  When I called just to double-check requirements at Chester Conty's courthouse they were very nice.

Not being snarky just curious. I never understand why people go by their middle name. Did you decide you liked it better or did you parents/family always call you by your middle name?

I work at a law firm and it is a PITA when people tell us their name is one thing then we come to find out that is not their legal name.

It's a southern thing, all of my family goes by their middle name, I never knew my first name until I was in kindergarten, even then I didn't understand. that's why i want to eliminate the confusion.  I'm always being told my middle name isn't my 'real' name, but it is!  It's just as legal as my first it just confuses some people... and I'd rather eliminate that confusion.

gotcha! I wish everyone who goes by their middle name would take the same initiative as you ;) Good luck with figuring it out.

call your local county orphan's court and see what the requirements are. If you want to do a complete legal name change, you will likely need to appear in front of a Judge. It's not too complicated...just time consuming
