Officiant Etiquette & Reference Question

Most of the people I know have been married in their church by their minister, priest etc. They have paid very little if anything and they tip them very well or make a nice donation to their church. We are hiring an officiant from an online wedding officiant website who we do not know and they are charging us a fee of $300 plus mileage. Do we still tip them? Is $300 a reasonable price?

Has anyone used "The Wedding Ministers & Officiants"? or James Scarborough in particular?

TIA!

Hello! We are planning to use this company as well for our January wedding. I'm not sure if the price is "normal" but one of my relatives attended a wedding where one of the ministers from here was officiating and she said it was really beautiful. That is why I chose this company. They do a "meet and greet" with you and your fiance and you fill out a paper that tells him about how y'all met, when you fell in love, etc.

Girl, he just did my wedding and it was AMAZING. Honestly, every guest I talked to LOVED him. I met with him once...and that was it. He made it SO personalized...how? I don't know because he didn't know me. He was so easy to work with and so professional. I'm telling you - he was so much better than I could have ever imagined. He talked about relationships and the symbols of the rings and unity candles and what they stood for and just got so into detail with it all. It was not a boring ceremony whatsoever!

That sounds perfect! That is what I want. I have just been worrying like crazy about it because the last few weddings I have been to were horrible (the officiant/minister). One he called my friend by every name OTHER than her actual name during the ceremony, one we thought the guy fell asleep while speaking and we could barely hear him and then another he rambled through the ceremony so fast we all looked at eachother like ummmm what just happened?

Did you tip? That's the part I am unsure about. Normally with your minister or pastor they don't charge or if they do it is a small amount and people will tip them or make an offering. Since this guy is charging $300 plus mileage and you are not a member of his church do you tip extra? I'm confused on this.

    I didn't. I maybe should have - I'm not sure.
He was there for an hour and a half pretty much...I felt me paying him 300 bucks was totally fine. Others may say eh that's not nice...he was invited to my reception - but didn't attend. I highly recommend him though - he was excellent. He came and took pictures with me before the ceremony and everything. I kept telling him I was going to throw up on him and he made me VERY calm throughout the whole thing...it was more him telling stories about marriage and not just "blah blah blah" repeat after me yada yada. I also loved that we had the "love is patient love is kind" verse read by my husbands grandmother. James took that verse and said "shawna is patient..chris is kind..." and just did all kinds of things with it..very neat!

I would not tip.  Maybe send a nice thank you card or something if you feel necessary.

Ok thanks for the advice ladies. I was thinking if he is charging that much and charging mileage that I wouldn't be expected to tip. I just wanted to make sure I did what is proper in this case and I wouldn't look like an ungrateful a-hole. Smile

Yay I'm excited about all the positive feedback he is also my officiant ! He was pretty outgoing when we met him and I hired him on the spot.
