going crazy!!!!

i live in mass.. but our family is in NY and NJ we are planning to do the wedding were the family is but we are on a budget (tight) any ideas?? Help!! :)

Re: going crazy!!!!

  • When do you want to have it? Off season months are cheaper (Dec-March for most NJ venues I saw).

Can you do a Friday or Sunday? If its  a small guest list can you have it at a restaurant instead of a reception hall?

I'm planning a wedding from a distance.  You do a lot over the phone and e-mail.  It's nice that your family is in the area though.  You can try to recruit family to put in a little of the leg work.  I've been grouping my wedding planning.  In two weekends I'm going to visit my parents for a meeting packed wedding weekend to get a lot done.

You can do it.  Take it one step at a time.  Don't be afraid to ask for help and expect to make some compromises along the way.
  • I live in VA and am having my wedding where my family (and where my FI is from) in PA.  I have been able to get a lot done during trips up to see the fam during the weekends.  Our next trip is in March at some point then in April for our bridal shower.

We asked FI's famly for recommendations on florists, hair salons, and just about everything else.  This really helped because than we had a better idea of where to go.  We were able to call for pricing and details and then decide who we wanted to meet with after looking over th prices.  This really narowed things down and enabled us to make appointments for specific weekends with just about every vendor we needed.  Depending on how far in advance you are to plan and book everything, you may be able to meet with everyone you need to spread out over a few weekends.

We met with and booked most of our vendors between September and December.  This was their slow time and allowed them to be more flexible with the times they could meet with us and for how long.

I would also recommend going to the bridal shop during their slow times, which to from what I heard is before the holidays.  People seem to get their dresses after the holiday rush for summer weddings.  I would also try to avoid weekends if possible and make an appointment for a day you have off during the week, you will get more attention and more time to discuss and decide.

If you are thinking about doing favors I would recomend something you can purchase and ship to your families house. This way you won't have to worry about bringing them with you and any damage during transit.

    Best of Luck!!

  • I live in NY and I'm getting married in Ohio. Pick someone in your family that you trust and designate them your decision maker. I chose to give up control of a lot of things in order to make it work. Email, skype, trusted reviews. That's how you make it work.
