Looking for a unique venue in Connecticut

Hi. Newly engaged. Just starting to plan. We want to keep it small (under 75 ppl...really, I'd love under 50 ppl but fiance's family is big.) We're not religious and are looking for an all-purpose venue...we want to do vows and reception in the same location. We're looking for affordable but also unique...so no receoption halls, country clubs...more like a beautiful library or gorgeous loft space.

Another requirement is accessibility. We have a few relatives that don't get around too well...so there can't be a lot of walking, no stairs, and plenty of places to sit are needed.

Oh, and we live in Fairfield County...(that might not make much difference.)
Thank you all for any ideas!

  • We are getting married at lighthouse point park in new haven. They are unique because they have a working carousel in the building that will run through your event!

  • I'm not sure what your budget it but check out Webb House Barn and Wickham park.  There is also the Branford House in Groton which is beautiful, or you can rent out the pavillion at Rocky Neck state park; also very pretty.  There is also an old lace factory in deep river, but their website does not have a lot of information.
  • I am getting married at the Webb Barn and have to agree with the PP, it is a great option. With 75 people, you may want to check out the Dudley Farm in Guilford. You can get married outside, anywhere on their grounds. The barn can hold 75 comfortabley and is definitely a unique venue. There is plenty of parking and tons of super cute B&Bs in the area for your guests to stay at. We also looked into the Lace Factory in Deep River. It has a really cool, vintage vibe to it.

    Good luck!
  • Definitely check out The Branford House...it's a mansion on the water in Groton.  We are getting married there in Sept and it's beautiful!  it's $4,000 to rent it out for the entire day and you can bring in all of your own vendors.  It's got a beautiful lawn if you wanted your ceremony outside.  http://www.branford.uconn.edu/

Here are some pics I took the other weekend when we met with a tent company:

  • I'm getting married at Mystic Aquarium this summer! It's extremely unique as far as locations go. You can have your ceremony and reception at the Aquarium. Since they're a public location, the area is all wheelchair accessable.
  • I, too, was also looking for a not so typical venue. The above mentioned are great ideas! I am getting married at the Gershon Fox Room in Hartford next March. I love it bc you can have your ceremony in the Atrium, your cocktail hour in the mezzanine and the reception in the "ballroom" which is far from typical! It's $75 pp on a Sun. In March and in Nov. http://marquee-ct.com/gershonRoom.html

We did look at the lace factory in Essex also. It seems like a great space you can really make your own.

  • Thanks, Cate!  I took a few good ones...let me know if you want me to email them to you :-)
  • Definitely check out the Washington Club Hall in Washington , CT..it is beautiful!!! and a hidden gem and you can bring in any vendors you want...plus the cost to rent the hall is inexpensive!
  • My cousin and his fi are getting married at Union League Cafe. They are having less than 100 people. Check out different restaurants you like and see if they can accomodate your group.  I would even call local libraries that you might light and see if they would be willing to hold the wedding.

Cranbury Park in Norwalk has a beautiful spot for a ceremony and you can have a tented reception outside.

You can also look into Burr Homestead in Fairfield.

    Best of luck!
  • PS
    Congratulations!!
  • We're getting married at the Village at Boulder Ridge memorial day weekend, 2013.  It's a summer camp that also does weddings, so you can have it pretty fancy if you like, or you can set up lawn games and use their rock climbing wall and their lake to go kayaking and canoeing.  You can do the ceremony inside in front of their gorgeous fireplace, or outside in front of the gazebo.  the grounds are gorgeous, and Nick is fantastic to work with.
  • Thank you all so much for the great suggestions. I certainly have a lot of research ahead of me! :)
  • My photographer 'Sassy Mouth Photography' posted a blog about unique reception ideas, and she is totally in love with the CT Science Center, it's really different and she has gotten great pictures there. I'm not sure of the price though!
