When to have a wedding?

Me and my fiance are having trouble with picking a time for our wedding. Neither of us wants a summer wedding so we are thinking fall (Sept-Oct) of early winter (beginning of Dec. or beginning of Jan.). We also have most of our guests coming from out of state, any ideas or inputs? Thanks

What ideas do you have for your wedding?  Would you like it to be outdoor, indoor; cozy, chic; industrial, romantic?  I think depending on that, you could either select the season (cozy would work well in the winter, but if you want something outdoor, you'd probably want it in the fall) or select a venue and see what openings they have, especially if you're thinking 2010.

Also consider that Dec/Jan might get you off-season discounts with many vendors, and since it's a less popular time, you might have more selection in venues/vendors as well.

Feel free to bounce your ideas off us - we love to help out!  And welcome to the boards :)

We are a having a very romantic, lace and pearls style wedding but still keeping it casual. We are having it indoors. I'm just nervous about having it so close to Christmas time!

Since it sounds like you have a nicely defined theme going, why don't you start looking for the perfect venue and see what dates start working out?  Don't worry about timing.  Unless it's actually on Christmas day or during Chanukah, everyone will be excited to be at your wedding!

I agree with LIttleSweetie, go and look at venues to match your wedding theme. I personally think a winter wedding with the lace and pearls would be beyond gorgeous!!

My wedding is in 11 days : )  January 30th.  We didn't want it too close to Christmas and I think our timing worked out really well.

We always wanted a winter wedding though.  Plus it is a great time to go on a honeymoon!

winter sounds nice for your theme... End of January, into February, people are always looking for something fun to do, instead of hibernate, and rarely have things booked for their weekends, so it seems like a good time to celebrate, and a good reason for you two to leave MN every year for an anniversary trip to somewhere warm :)

We got married on Jan. 2nd this year. It was nice for most of our oot guests since they could coordinate coming home for Christmas and coming to our wedding. Although it did end up prohibiting some guest from attending because they were still celebrating Christmas with their families. If you choose a date close to the Holiday's I would highly recommend sending out save the dates so people have it on their calendar and can plan accordingly.

You do get a ton of discounts if you have your wedding in January. Be carful because not all vendors consider December the off season anymore due to all fo the Christmas weddings that are popping up. But January is typically considered the off season. Our hotel was so willing to work with us simply because we were bringing them tons of business on a typically low occupancy weekend for them.

The other thing to consider when thinking about a wedding close to the holidays is that people are really busy from Thanksgiving through Christmas, so your showers will have to take place in the fall. This wasn't a terrible thing for me, it just meant that I had to register earlier since my first shower was in September. I had five showers total, so fitting them all in before Thanksgiving was a bit tricky. But it made the fall go by really fast and then it was the holidays and then it was the wedding.

Luckily we didn't have any problems due to weather, however if the Christmas snow storm that we had in 2009 had hit one weekend later, we would have been in trouble. However you can't control the weather, so don't try.

I loved our winter wonderland wedding theme, lots of discounted items after Christmas, and the snowflake theme was really easy to work with. A January wedding date is unusual, but we had so much fun. And the honeymoon to St. Lucia right after the wedding was fabulous. I could go on forever about winter weddings. Let me know if you have more questions.

Originally, we were looking into a January wedding, but we needed more time for planning. We thought it would be a great time of year....after the hustle and bustle of the holidays....everyone is getting settled in again, and it isn't a peak time for weddings.....deals :) I think a mid/late Janurary wedding would be great!  As mentioned before, a nice time to honeymoon!

    Happy planning! Smile
