Thinking of postponing!!

Today, I got a call from a collection company regarding my school loan MA Program saying that I owe 5,000. I called the school and they told me they had made a mistake in my loan and that the last 3 classes were still not paid. In order to continue in the program I had to pay out of pocket. Awwww so, I have to pay the full of amount 5,000 which is half of the budget. Oh and my FI has no job since he got laid off in mid summer. I told my FI the wedding had to be postponed and we got into a big fight : :

Re: Thinking of postponing!!

  • I'm sorry to hear that. If you already had that on a loan, why not take out a loan to pay the rest? That way you are still in the same position except the money owed would be for the wedding and not the classes. I know it isn't the best advice to say borrow it, but if you are in the same boat, what does it matter?

  • Have you thought about downsizing the wedding and keeping it on the same date? I am not sure of the size of your guest list or where you are having the wedding, but I'm sure you can do something lovely with a 5000 budget. Postponing is an option, if it works for both of you, but it may end up costing more in the long run. If you already have deposits on vendors, you may not be able to get those back. If you decide not to postpone, I'm sure the ladies on here can give you some great ideas on how to stay within your budget. I love planning, and helping others plan! Lol. Let me know if there's anything I can do!

I agree. I have done the same thing too... My school keeps saying you owe this much for that class and this much for this class, and unfortunately I have a "put it on my tab" attitude about it. I've already got thousands and thousands of school loans that I will be paying off forever... what's another few thousand? School is ridiculously expensive... Sorry that's a soft spot for me because I've had a jagillion financial problems with school.<div>
</div><div>Anyway, if that is not an option, I agree with PP aput using a 5k budget. It can work with some creative thinking!</div>

  • You can still have a great wedding on a 5k budget.  It will take some creative thinking and you may have to downsize just a bit that only if you and your FI are willing too. In the end you have to do what's best for you and your FI. Hopefully he understands that this isn't your fault. Whatever decision you make we are here to help!!!

  • Whatever decision you and FI come to is completely up to you. But PPs do have a point in downsizing any way you can. Did you send out STDs?

I had to postpone too, FI and I were originally going to get married this past June but then my parents told us they weren't going to be able to contribute financially. Without their contribution, we wouldn'tve been able to do even a $5k wedding lol. Postponing has actually ended up being a huge blessing, 1 of our GMs was expecting his first child the day of our original date and we've had more time to put money away.

  • Im sorry to hear you are in a bind, but I DO NOT recommend taking out another loan to put yourself back in the same position. A $5k school loan will likely have a much lower interest rate and there is no need to start off your life together in debt from your wedding.

I would talk to your vendors to see what they can do to accomodate your newly reduced budget. My venue was willing to waive our F&B minimum and that has helped us tremendously. Hopefully you can get creative and pull off a nice wedding on your newly reduced budget.
