Aww snap, new Kindle!

New Kindle 3. Sounds like cooler specs and has 3G network. It's the regular $189. But what I'm excited about (I think) is what I think of as the Kindle Lite. It only has wi-fi, not 3G. It's a new low price of $139! And it comes in graphite also. I think I could deal with the wi-fi only, especially since that would put me 1 week closer to getting. I'm saving up and should be able to order in 3-4 weeks. I've been wanting one for months!

Re: Aww snap, new Kindle!

  • They have it in colors now?! SONOFABITCH.

I honestly haven't used my wireless.
  • You can totally deal with just the wireless. You can also just plug it into your computer and grab books that way (although having the wireless is nice...). The 3G doesn't even work that well, IMO. I get better reception from my cell phone.

The graphite is nice looking. I saw a commercial yesterday fo it. I like my white one, though.

  • I'm stupid but could someone explain the wi-fi v. 3G thing?

I'm glad you posted this!  My mom wants one for Christmas but I thought they were way more expensive!

  • Glad to hear the 3G isn't worth it! I think even if it were, my instant gratification gene would kick in and I'd rather have it sooner. But of course it is pre-order, so I have no idea how long it would take to get it.

  • 3G is like what your cell phone would you. Anywhere you get an ATT signal, you would be able to download a book (like driving down the road). Wi-fi is your wireless signal that makes your laptop run the internet without being hooked up to any wires.

  • I've only downloaded non-Amazon books to the kindle from my computer, but basically it works like an ipod or a big external hard drive. You can pretty much download books to your computer, plug your kindle in, and drag the books into a kindle folder.

I will say that IMO, 3G is worth it if you travel a lot.  I'm in airports a lot, and wireless isn't free, so I've downloaded books using 3G that way before and will in the future.

Buuut if you're smarter than me and have the foresight to download your books while you're home, you're fine.

  • Yeah, we poor right now and only do car traveling. I think I would remember to download books before I left, because it wouldn't be any different than having to remember to pack books or go to the used book store before the trip.

This is how I do it also, and I am able to get around VAT and the higher cost for just downloading in Europe.

Again, where do you all get these books? I don't have a problem downloading them to my computer, I'd just like to get around buying a million books. I'll still buy new releases I'm sure, but I'd like to get older books too.

Project Gutenburg. I'm sure there are more sites, too. Basically, any e-book that you can download in .pdf or .txt will be readable on the kindle.

If you can't find older books (main classics - things that are out of copyright) for free on there, Amazon does have a lot that are $1 or $2. I used to use the library a LOT and that was one thing I was wary of with the kindle, but it's not too bad, IMO.

  • If they are in PDF or .TXT, does the page turning work the same?

Yeah. The pages are dependent on the size of the text (which you can adjust), not pre-determined page breaks or anything. There's a bar on the bottom that tells you what percentage of the book you've read, rather than how many pages there are, to account for that.
