Name Change / Car Registration Question

Short Version:
Does it cost money to change the name on your car registration?

Long version:
Just got notice in the mail it is due by 9/30/10.
Getting married end of August, looking to change name upon returning from honey moon in early September.
Should I WAIT to renew after the name change to avoid paying the $46 twice...? Does it even cost money to change the name? Will approximately 1 month be enough time, or will I be cutting it too close?
And oh yeah ~ its due for inspection.

I tried calling the DMV, and that's been like trying to move the ocean with an eye dropper because I just keep getting passed around and then hung up on.

    Did you try the website? It may be just as easy as an address change meaning you fill out a form online and get a sticker in the mail.

    you have to renew it so it would cost $. I had to change my name and mine had to be renewed in Aug. And even if you change your name its going to have to be renewed again that would cost $.

    It's a cost for the name change here in GA - not sure about NJ. But I'm pretty sure it's the same. So whether you wait or you do it now it's going to be a charge.
