Too short and uneven hem

So I picked up my dress today from DB, and when I tried it on at home it looked like it was a little too short and like the hem was shorter on one side than the other...

Trying not to freak out, since it's pre-alterations and I have plenty of time, but...can this is be explained anyway? I'm barely 5 feet tall and the consultant assured me when I ordered that even with heels, a petite dress would need to be hemmed.

It was obviously wrinkled from shipping and I couldn't zip it all the way up by myself, so would a good steam and zipping make the hem look different?

Re: Too short and uneven hem

  • Unless it's severly wrinkled (as in the fabric is pleated from wrinkling) then it won't be too much longer when it's steamed.  I do think that is the reason the hem looks off though.  Wait and take it to your alterations person before you freak out.

  • Agreed.  Wait until you take it for alterations and if it is still wacky,  ask how it can be fixed.
  •   Sometimes finishing issues like that happen in gowns with cheap construction. Lower prices mean less skilled labor, emphasis on speed rather than quality, and less quality control.
I'm sure it can be fixed when you get your gown altered.
  • Are you by any chance wearing a petticoat under the dress?  Or does the dress have layers of tulle underneath of it to add some poofiness?  If so, to lengthen the top fabric, some of the underskirting can be snipped away to lessen the poofiness which will thus lengthen the top fabric.  If you are wearing a petticoat, the same could possibly be done or you could just not wear one which may help the length as well.

  • Not everyone can or want to spend money on a top of the line gown.  Your response was kind of harsh.
  • I'm sorry you read my response as harsh. It was an honest explanation of why these things happen, followed by reassuring her that it can be fixed in alterations. I am sure the OP will look lovely in her dress, and others who read this post may feel better armed having that info when dress shopping.
