Weird Phobias or fears

Re: Weird Phobias or fears

  • I have a fear of being killed in a firey wreck. I've had this fear for the last few years because I take cabs home after late work shifts and some drivers drive like maniacs. My fear was was itensified recently when a man died in a car accident outside my house. We called the fire department because the crash woke us up and the car was on fire but they couldn't save him. It was horrible.
oh god gretch, that is terrible... I probably shouldn't fill you in on the state of the Q bridge in New Haven then ;)

You mean that bridge I got stuck on for an hour on my wedding day?? Oh please, don't! If some bridges are that unsafe, why are people still allowed to drive on them?

  • Hi Katiewhompus!! I was thinking of this exact thread topic earlier this week.

Automatic car washes completely freak me out. It's so silly, but I get goosebumps and shaky and have to take deep breaths. DH usually washes my car for me, but if I'm with someone and they want to run through the automatic car wash I get the heebie jeebies. I'm too embarassed to voice my fear. I'm not sure what the hell I think will happen? I just feel trapped.

  • Big grasshoppers. I freak out when they are near me and if they are too close I get an itchy feeling in my ear like they are crawling in there to eat my brain

calling people I don't know (even ordering pizza)

something terrible happening to DH or my family. I don't know what I'd do without any of them and every day I worry something bad is going to happen.

Seshat - I used to be completely terrified of talking on the phone to someone I didn't know. I'd have to psych myself out before doing so, and then just do it and get it over with.  Now, my job requires that I talk to many people each day via phone, and it's made it much easier!

  • ggmae--I've gotten better about the phone, but there are timesw when my heart starts racing and I can't think of the right words. Luckily I don't have to deal with customers via phone at work, just email. And even then some of them are really nasty so I'd never be able to call them knowing how they talk to us.

Ah, the email is good! If I am going to make a phone call, I create a script beforehand of what I am going to say. It definitely helps to calm my nerves!

  • i'm terrified of submerged/partially submerged inanimate objects in natural water. for example, when i was in HS, we lived on a lake. one day, i went out in a canoe with my step brother. at the end of this cove, there was a partially submerged old bridge/dock thing. most of it was under water and just part of it was visible. i could barely function. it still upsets me to think about it. i'm not sure i'd survive scuba diving around a ship wreck or anything like that!
  • Being smothered, and not being able to move. Sometiems when FI comes to bed, he hugs me too hard and I freak out because I can't move my arms. Also, if he accidentally pulls the covers up over my head, I can't deal. I guess I'm claustrophobic, but its not severe as long as whatever is confining me is not actually touching me.

  • Sarah, I'm kind of like that. I can't handle DH's hands on my neck (even in a sweet way, like if we're kissing) or someone holding onto my arm or wrist. I've been "trapped" like that in an aggressive way before so now I freak out when something like that happens. Not so much with the covers, but having someone's hands on my throat or wrists.
  • Katie - that just sucks!
Ooooh, I wanna play. I'm scared to drive on the freeway and I'm scared to pump my own gas. For some reason, I keep thinking I'm going to get into a high-speed accident and if I pump my gas, I might cause an explosion and burn myself. <strong>Oh you can add not knowing I'm pregnant either</strong>. I believe it's highly impossible but after the shiit I see on TV, I guess it is. I would freak if I'm trying to do a #2 and a baby pops out (apologies for being gross).
    Posted by Champagne Supernova
OMG, me too!  Every time I watch I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant on TLC, I have to take a pregnancy test...even if I just had a period.  I know a few people who were 4-5 months along before they knew and the thought just scares the sh!t out of me.

  • Terrified of SNAKES. If I see one doing its own thing/hasn't spotted me, its not so bad but even in movies they creep me out.

Also, I'm in the volunteer fire company. My biggest fear is being called out to an address of someone I know and care about or getting into a situation where they call my fire dept. to come rescue me (esp since my dad is the chief).

On a slightly more ironic note, I'm afraid of not being able to breathe (or at least breathe easy) which sometimes creates a moment of panic when I have my air mask on at a fire training or actual fire.

Oh and JELLY FISH freak me the H out. I'd rather meet a shark than a jelly fish at the beach.

I had an ex who used to like to hold the back of my neck instead of my hand in public. It was very disconcerting, almost like he was a puppeteer. what a weirdo. I put a stop to that really quick.

I don't even remember being trapped that way in an agressive way, but my cousin used to hold me down while he tickled me to death. I flinch every time he touches me now, even though we are both grown and he hasn't tickled me in like 20 years.
I do have asthma so I think that is where the suffocation fear comes from.

  • I can't sleep with my foot or hand hanging off the bed.  I'm afraid someone under the bed will grab it and pull me off.

  • I am absolutely petrified of chainsaws.  I cry... doesn't serve me well when I'm at the Haunted House.  My ex used to hold me and get the guy's attention and laugh while I cried.  FI hides me.
  • I definitely have a phobia of cockroaches.  It is really terrible, I'm shuddering just typing this.  They scare me so much.  I spent a lot of my summers as a kid in Jamaica and they have giant flying roaches there.  They are the worst things on earth.

Perhaps more unusual, is my phobia of high ceilings.  It is debilitating.  I cannot walk under a rotunda.  I feel like I am going to die.  I cannot look up and see what is above me, I'm too afraid.  I have no fear of heights (and if I go to the top of the rotunda it isn't a problem), but cannot handle rotundas.  I'd also freak out if I was standing next to a really high smokestack or a cooling tower or something.
Anyone ever worry their debit or credit card will be declined? Not because of money issues, but just something wonky with the bank or the processing system? I think that would be very embarrassing and I'd probably never want to go back to that place again. It happened to a co-worker of mine at lunch.  Poor girl looked like she wanted the floor to open and swallow her up.

OMG! This!! I don't even use my debit card unless I have to. I just get cash out of the ATM. But, if for some reason I have to use my debit my heart starts racing. I know exactly how much money I have in my account.. but still...

I've never had anything happen to be aggressively but I can't stand when H holds my wrist. He does it because he likes to see me freak. i can't stand his leg over mine when we're in bed either... he thinks I'm a strange one.

  • SCB, I come from a really small town and that happened to one of my friends. He was one of the 5 EMT's for the city and was called out to a car wreck with his father driving the Ambulance (also emt obviously). The first car was incredibly mangled and the driver was killed on contact and very mangled. The driver of the second car got out and said "Oh my god, is Shelly ok?" and started crying. Sure enough he looked at her ID and the driver who was killed was his sister.
  • I'm also too afraid to KILL spiders.  I'm afraid if I miss they will jump on me Frown

The sight of a spider has actually rendered me catatonic before.  And it's so embarrassing, since I'm a professional and I'm supposed to be looking out for my students' well-being (I teach the 4 & 5s class at a preschool), but whenever there's a spider, I have to get  the 3-year-old teacher to come kill it.  One time, my oldest boy killed one before I could even see where it was.  He tried to catch one in the bug habitat yesterday (thankfully, he didn't, but now it's lurking in the woodwork somewhere...),

    I'm so lame.
In Response to Re: Weird Phobias or fears : Oh, hell NO. My friends wanted me to go shark feeding in Australia, and I told them that they were crazy. Thankfully they were all too broke to do it because they stopped hounding me about it. I know that the best way to beat a fear is to face it, but this is one fear that I hope to NEVER come face to face with!

Ya I'm not so big on this idea.  He keeps telling me they are tiny sharks....tiny as in only 3-4 feet.  Um no thanks.  I scream underwater when a barracuda or parrot fish go by.  I think I'd faint with the sharks.  Though if I stay on the boat while he's doing this I'll freak out about him being without me (not sure what help I'd be but ya never know).  He's an expert scuba diver and always dives with 3-4 knives.  I guess that's supposed to make me feel better.

He's insisting that on our trip to Australia he wants to go free swimming with great whites.  I will need a lot of rum and valium if he really does this.

Yeah I have this fear.  Mine came from an ex getting to aggressive when drunk (he was 6'4") and used to get a "thrill" out of pinning me on my stomach and shoving my face into pillows (ah being a silly 15 year old).  I still cannot stand being pinned or things tight over my face.

I hear ya! I went snorkeling in the Caribbean only because my mom was in the water and I didn't want her to go alone! I didn't enjoy it though - I floated there looking around for shark fins. I was having a friggin heart attack!

And there is no way in hell I'd ever let N free swim with great whites, even if it was his passion or life goal. No friggin way!
