Wedding Shows

So...I am a teacher and I have the privledge of staying home in the summer time. Basically this translates to me being able to watch all of the wedding shows I want.  So I just finished watching this show called Four Weddings and a marathon of Say Yes to the Dress.  Is it just me or does every single bride you know think their wedding is the best?  When I watch say yes to the dress I think my dress is the most flattering and beautiful (and CHEAPER)!!  and when I watch Platinum Weddings I think of how much less I spent and how much more spectacular my wedding was.
So:  Do ya'll feel the same when you watch these shows and what was the best part of your wedding or soon to be wedding?

It's all relative.  I watch Platinum Weddings and see how spectacular their weddings were.  Would I spend that kind of money...no.  Do they look more beautiful than how mine was...absolutely.  Money buys lots of things.  Only difference is that I'm not interested in so much glamour for a wedding, so that makes my wedding just that much prettier in my mind's eye, but I am a realist.

It's the same as the whole, "my baby is the most beautiful baby ever."  Um...that's because it's yours, so yeah, in your eyes, it's the most beautiful baby, but I guarantee you the next person won't think that about your baby.

It depends...I see some amazing dresses but I know they would look horrible on me. Then I see people who love a dress that is hideous and think, "are they on something?". Not everyone will love my dress or probably think it is the best for me but I will love it so that is what matters.

About cost of some of those weddings all I have to say is this. No matter how much we spend it will be fantastic because we are getting married. I am the first to have a formal wedding in my family. They thought my budget was outrages. We went to visit one day and my dad was watching all the wedding shows. He would yell (I'm in a different room) "they spent 10k on the dress!" I would yell back "that is our entire budget!" He would yell "They just spent 40k on food!" Me "that is 4 times my budget!" These shows made him realize how sane I really am when it comes to weddings.

On the baby thing....I have known some super cute babies! I don't know if our will be as cute but I will love him/her more then I love those super cute babies. :) A couple of those super cute babies I know personally was one of my brothers and a friends kid.

If I had the money there are so many things I would add or change BUT I don't so I do whatever I loved for the wedding and know it will be fantastic. I don't feel like I am missing out on anything when I watch those shows... I just dream of winning the lottery! lol I would rather have my MDX and a wedding then just the wedding!

Both FI and I agree that even if money were no object, our wedding wouldn't be any different than what it will turn out to be - it's taking shape exactly as we wanted for a very modest budget because it wouldn't be us to do anything super-extravagant, and we are ridiculous researchers / bargain shoppers, so everything we do, we make sure we are absolutely getting the best service/product for the best price.  We joke that if we had unlimited funds, it wouldn't be any different, but it sure would have been less work!  It just blows me away that people spend as much as on a car or house.

Yea these weddings are great but even if I were rich, I cant say that I would want my wedding any place other then a yatch.  Yea if I were rich it may be my wn yatch instead of a rented one or the food may be more grand, but I'm glad with how my wedding is taking shape.  Also I hate Say Yes...I watch it, but I hate how the consultants complain about the customers, and how they make it seem like 2000.00 is not enough to get a great dress.  I found my perfect dress for 750.00 and I would never go to Kleinfeld even if I had the money.  Your perfect dress does not have to be 10,000.00.  I love to shop but I love a bargain and thats just too much in my opinion.

I'm not usually the type to compare, so I watch many of these shows just to get ideas and learn about new fads and styles. Sometimes you're able to pull of a "platinum" detail without spending the money, so I think it's fun to challenge myself to see if I can accomplish a certain detail element via DIY.

The only thing I can say with any confidence is that I chose the best dress that complements me and my budget...and that I'm having the best wedding that is perfect for FI and me. I completely understand that these shows were created as a marketing tool for the wedding industry and business is business after all :-). To each their own.

I think some of these shows can make any bride on a budget feel that there will never be enough time (or money) to pull off such extravagance without a platinum planner!!  Some are really over the top!  (But still fun to watch).  It's easy to feel overwhelmed by it all.  But my decorator friend informed me that it's easier to make a smaller space look 5-star, and so to keep it all into perspective I'm going to focus on my new hubby that day, and marvel at it all coming together.
