Re: Growing out your hair

  • I am, but I haven't changed supplements... just long engagement so it's been growing out for like 2 years now....

I have heard pre-natal vitamins are good for your hair, but I think that would freak FI out lol

  • I am, but I'm not using any supplements for it. I just decreased how often I go to get my hair cut.

  • I am also trying to grow my hair out.  I did not get any supplements but I am using a strengthening shampoo and conditioner.  It is Pantene, but there are other more expensive ones that I was not willing to pay money on yet.

  • I've been growing mine out but haven't been taking supplements. Have an OB/GYN appointment in a few weeks and I'm going to mention that we'll likely want to start trying to conceive a few months after the wedding. Nicer hair would be a nice side effect to starting prenatals lol

I heard it's really good to start them months before TTC!  And that the gummy from target are good <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-wink.gif" border="0" alt="Wink" title="Wink" />

  • I chopped mine off recently . . .

BUT, my sister's hair grew like crazy when she was taking prenatal vitamins and it looked great (shiney, healthy, etc.).

  • I'm growing it for the wedding. I usually keep it around shoulder length but for the updo I want, I need a little extra. I'm just making sure to take care of it (not flat iron or blow dry it so much) and not getting it cut quite so often.

  • I'm growing mine too. Not using any supplements, just a good shampoo and conditioner (Treseme Heat Protection). I also use Aveda prodcuts whenever I blow-dry or straighten my hair. I also just get 1/4-1/2" trimmed off when I get it cut. My biggest hair concern is that I cut my bangs a few weeks ago and HATED IT!! So now I'm hoping they will grow out nicely in 5 months.

  • I've heard pre-natals help w/ hair and nails.  I bought a bottle a year ago but i am terrible at remembering to take vitamins (and they were like horse pills).  I've been meaning to pick up another bottle and try again.

I have color treated hair (about 6" below my shoulders, which I heat style) and the Pureology line has really helped make it shinier and get less split ends so I can go longer between trims.  It is very expensive (about $40 each for the shampoo and conditioner), but a tiny bit goes a long way.  I wash my hair 3-4x a week and use the Pureology most days, but alternate some times w/ a cheaper shampoo.  I can usually get a bottle to last me about 8-9 mos.
  • I am trying to grow it out as much as possible. I've been taking biotin which is supposed to help with hair and nails, and I've noticed that my hair is growing a lot faster. The only downside is it is growing faster everywhere, so I'm shaving everyday when I used to shave every few days. lol.

I also use heat protectant if I am blow-drying my hair or straightening it, as well as a good shampoo/conditioner.

I've been thinking about taking Biotin too. Does it also help your hair look shinier and healthier?

I'm growing it, but not using any supplements.  My hair is pretty long right now, and I'm SO ready to chop it off!  I keep joking that the day we get back from our honeymoon I'm off to the hair salon to get a nice short cut! :)

  • I'm hoping that mine will be at least to the middle of my back by October. It's laying on my shoulders now. I was taking some prenatal vitamins because my OBGYN told me I need to take them before coming off BC if we are going to be TTC. But I was put on some antidepressant and antianxiety meds and I stopped taking it for some reason....

  • I'm growing it out, but it probably won't get too long.  It's at my shoulders right now.  haha, my FI would flip if I started taking prenatal vitamins too!  It's tempting though because I can't see getting much length in the next 5 months.

  • I am letting my hair grow... but it is already pretty long as it is. It's got about four inches to get to my butt. I have actually been thinking about how much I need to get a trim at the moment, I have dead ends that need cut off.

Hearing all of you guys talk about it, I might go look for some supplements to help things along. I mostly want my bangs and my layers to grow out. Plus I have the underneath of my hair dyed right now and I am thinking that I want that to go away as well.

  • I'm desperately trying to grow mine out!  I've been growing it out for about three years now and it's been a major work in progress.  I have very curly hair and of course, I want straight hair.  I went to a stylist and she relaxed my hair but it completely fried it and all of my hair was damaged.  I've basically been cutting away at that hair for so long that now all if it has finally grown out and been chopped off.  I'm now 100% back to my natural curls and it's gotten down to just past my shoulders.  I would LOVE to have it down to my mid back.  I haven't been blow-drying it or straightening it much and luckily it's getting to a length where it actually looks decent when it's curly.  I may start taking supplements again; I was taking Hair, Skin and Nails by Nature's Bounty which is basically Biotin and it helped a lot.  This thread is making me want to start it again :)

Growing my hair out but not taking supplements.  Can we discuss how much I hate having my hair this long?  I can't wait to chop a good 6 inches or more off immediately after my wedding! ;-)
  • I'm trying, but OMG it's growing so slowly. It's still just a little past my shoulders, and I haven't gotten a significant cut since last August, although it was a bit past my chin at that point. I did take some supplements for a while (I forget what it was specifically, but it was GNC's house brand of hair & skin vitamins) and I didn't notice any difference so I didn't buy more hwen I ran out.

  • Yes, I'm growing my hair out.  It's pretty much about 2 inches or so away from the length that I'd like it to be at for the wedding.  It's about 5 inches below my shoulders.

I'm still getting regular trims (about every 8 weeks), just to get the split ends off.  Super long hair isn't so super when it's dry and full of split ends.  I also use a super thick conditioner on my ends every day (Pantene) and then once or twice a week I deep condition with Aveda Dry Remedy hair mask.

I've always taken a daily multivitamin, so nothing's changed there.  I'm also trying to eat more healthy oils (like olive oil, avocados, etc) for healthy skin and hair.

  • I started growing mine out when we got engaged September 2010 so it's gotten pretty long already. I've just been going longer between trims. I haven't taken any supplements but I might start soon to strengthen my hair and nails.

I've been growing it out ever since I cut it last July. For most of my life, I've had very long hair, and I cut it from waist-length to about 3 inches below my shoulders last summer when I was lifeguarding and didn't want to fuss with it. Now it's about halfway between where I cut it and where I want it to be, which is back to my waist. Right before I cut it, it was long enough that the ends would touch a chair when I sat down. I don't think I'll make it quite that far in 5 months though.

What's really fun is that FI is growing his hair out too. :D He had a pretty decent ponytail, but cut it the same day I did for a job he was offered that had grooming standards identical to Disney. Since he stopped working there in October, he's been letting it grow. Last weekend he pulled it back into a ponytail again for the first time since July! I'm excited because him having long hair will look awesome in a tux with tails. He's going to pull it back into an old-fashioned queue, tied with a ribbon.

I never even thought of taking vitamins specifically for growing it out or for my nails. I bit my nails for about 20 years, and stopped 3 years ago but my nails are still really brittle and almost impossible to grow out. I'll give FI a warning about it but I'm definitely considering pre-natal vitamins now! Especially as they come in gummies, and that's the only way I'll consistently take vitamins.

  • I'm growing mine out, not taking anything because it grows really quickly naturally. Like a previous poster after the wedding I'm going to get it cut short and donate my hair. It looks really nice like this but it's longer than it has ever been and I'm tired of it.
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

  • I'm growing mine out, but it was a recent decision.  I have a pixie cut and I always loved it.  However, about a month ago at work a passenger said, "thank you sir" to me and for some reason that sent me over the edge.  I think everyone asking if I was going to grow it out for the wedding had an influence on the decision too.
In any case, I know it won't be shoulder length in the next five months and FI keeps trying to talk me into just going ahead and cutting it.  I know he loves long hair though so we'll see how it goes. :)
I've just started taking prenatal vitamins, I hope they do work for growing hair as a bonus!

  • I'm growing out mines as well.  I got an awful cut awhile ago...uneven layers and horrible face frame.  So I've been trying to grow it out so its back to one length again.  I've never heard of Biotin, but I will be checking out.  Where do you pick it up at?  If I started taking pre-natal vitamins I think FI would have a heart attack...but it would be hilarious to see his reaction.

  • I've always had pretty long hair, but I cut it off to just below my shoulders a few years ago. I hated it and have been growing it out ever since. It's back to normal now, about 4-5 inches from my butt. I have been getting between 1/2-3/4 inch trims just to keep it healthy. Also, i know it kinda sucks, but not washing your hair everyday goes a long way. Every other day would be ideal, but even if you skip just once or twice a week it will make a big difference. Those natural oils will help to keep your hair healthy, and shiny.

Prenatals will def do your hair some good. My sister just had a baby three weeks ago. Her hair is so long, thick and shiny. I'm super jealous...lol

  • This post has had many replies, but for what it's worth, every time I see my stylist she compliments my healthy, shiny hair. I've been doing the same "regimen" for 4-5 years:

-Wash/condition with Tresseme products, ALWAYS use their Heat Protector spray before blow drying, straightening or curling. (Love their new Climate Control line. Perfect for Chicago's wacky weather!)
-Apply a leave-in deep conditioner once a week (put it on damp hair before bed and wash in the morning), and wash once a week with Neutrogena clarifying shampoo.
-I also take Biotin for my nails, which are weak and split a lot. I do think it helps my hair, too!

My hair was a little past chin length when we got engaged in early December 2011 and is now about shoulder length. Hoping it'll be an inch or so longer by October so I can wear in some kind of low updo...
