This just makes me think of The Flaming Lips "Do you Realize"
  • A few responses... First, I had to go to a meeting which is why I haven't reposted. Secondly, I realize that my post came of like "Debbie Downer". I am VERY in love with the DUDE and cannot wait to spend the rest of my life with him. It is just a little shocking how we as a society talk about a wedding. As far as having a party w/o the wedding. I would except that I feel like people wouldnt make it as much of a priority if it wasnt the actual wedding.

And as for my being in love with Benjamins. You got me. That is the secret reason why I dont enjoy wedding planning. I am in love with someone I have never met before.

I actually was thinking about what my dad always told me, growing up.

  • Linds - that whole love thing is from another post I made where I sounded like I was full of myself.

But I do think it's possible to be excited to marry someone and want to have a big, fun wedding without being all "ZOMG!  MY CAKE!  MY DRESS!  EVERYTHING MUST BE PERFECT!"  It definitely is shocking how weddings can be perceived - but for the most part, you just gotta roll along with your planning and eventually the people you're working with will come to understand your overall tone.  I suspect most brides they work with are a little zilla-ish, and since you're not like that - they'll eventually realize it and be relieved that they won't have to act like you're radiating sunshine out of your ass and actually be able to work with you like a real person.

    That too.
  • Benjamin- Ok. I was a little confused and people were a little mean so I got defensive! So sorry about that.

I am going to focus on the part that I like which is getting to spend time with my friends and family+alcohol. I think I am just a bit stressed about planning bc I want it to be great but I dont feel like I have a clue as to what I am doing.

  • Lol - don't worry about it.

And yeah with the planning - I seriously feel the EXACT same.  I don't have a clue either, I'm just going with it.  One day at a time :)

  • You know what I'm looking most forward to about getting married? The alcohol.
No...wait, the most exciting sound part is the whole married bit.
  • Being married is the best part of the wedding!

And the alcohol at my wedding will be for the guests... No one likes a sloppy bride. Our friends and family are just more fun while liquored up.

  • Correction...I like a sloppy bride. It makes for a much more entertaining wedding and an even better wedding story down the line. Sloppy BMs (that just sounds so wrong) are even more entertaining.

And I still think it sounds like all you want is a big blowout party.

  • There was another wedding going on at the hotel our reception was at.  The bride was piss-ass drunk.  One of my guests saw her throwing up in the bathroom.  Apparently she kept trying to come in our wedding and get a picture with "the other bride."
If that's not a classy bride, I don't know what is.

  • It sounds like you just aren't up for a traditional wedding, and that's fine. Just be straight with your vendors and your friends and family. I've seen tons of beautiful non-traditional weddings that aren't pretty princess days.

Check out Green Wedding Shoes for some non-traditional reception ideas. And watch how you word things around here because you very well may be referred to as "that knottie that just wants to get her guests plastered" for the rest of time.
  • Thanks for the tip about Green Shoes. As for phrasing, I hope that someone doesnt misconstrue statements that badly. I just want everyone to have fun and celebrate love and us being in love. That's it.

  • I was not much interested in the whole "magical" thing either, that is a part of the reason we chose to get married at Red Rock Canyon in Nevada. See, I would tell people we were marrying in Vegas and they saw pictures of Elvis Chapels and general cheesiness dancing in their heads and the talk about magic and unicorns and romance just kinda faded away. They said instead 'sounds like fun', secretly no doubt thinking we were going to do some "tacky" Vegas spectacle of a wedding.

Vegas vendors, even the ones who do things like Red Rock Canyon weddings do not do the fairies and rainbows talk, it is not in that local culture.

It has been fun to show people pictures here in MN, who had NO idea we were about to get married in one of the most beautiful natural landscapes on earth. Oh, and we got a lot of very romantic and magical shots with said landscape, too :)

But then that means they remembered your wedding!  haha

oh, and whoever has the dead unicorn, can I borrow it when you're done dragging it around?

  • Yeah, I get sick of all the froo froo crap.  But it must sell better for them or they wouldn't be doing it.  We saw six venues and it was the one that treated us the most normal that we booked with.
