That's not how I remember it at all

Does anyone else remember the movie The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia?  (Click)  I remember watching this on HBO when I was young (maybe 7 years old) and thinking it was the coolest movie ever.  I just rewatched some of the singing scenes on the site linked about and was laughing at how bad they are.

What childhood thing have you rediscovered only to have it be not as good as you remember?

Re: That's not how I remember it at all

  • Well... I remember the song by Reba McIntire :)

I grew up watching shows like Full House, Family Matters, Step By Step etc.  If you watch those shows now omg, it's almost painful how terrible they are.

Totally agree AATB. Also, saved by the bell.

  • Sick days. I remember in elementary school my mom would get me juice and try to make me feel better with her homemade chicken noodle soup. And the day seemed to las long and I could lay on the couch. Now, there is too much to do to take a complete sick day, doing nothing. Plus my mom lives states away so I can't have her soup.

  • OH man Saved by the Bell.  I actually didn't even like it back then, lol.  That show is SO BAD.

Ben found an old CD collection of mine from middle school and high school last week and we were laughing at lots of them.  Good Charlotte, Nickelback, Britney Spears, Hanson.  Ugh.  Lawdy.

  • My FIL still loves SBTB.  If he's not watching golf, he's watching that show.  Cracks me up.

Fun Dip candy is nasty and I remember begging for that as a kid.

    image
  • I still love all the kiddy shows.

But. Ewoks: the Battle for Endor is not nearly as awesome as I thought it was when I was little. I'm also finding that I don't care to watch horror movies as much. When I was little I loved that shiit and wasn't fazed in the least. Now movies like Saw turn my stomach.

Also, candy. I'm slowly losing my love for it.
  • I wonder if I would still like SBTB and Sister Sister? I did love those shows.

this has been mentioned recently, but I LOVED pogs. Now I think WTF? I mean seriously, what is to love about these stupid cardboard circles? that has got to be the dumbest fad of all time.

  • That is so funny jenna because I remember when all the kids were farting around on the playground with pogs I was all, fuckyou guys and my friends and I brought our marbles to school and played with our marbles instead.  Lol.  Marbles!

  • Jenna- my brother was obsessed ith pogs. Roller coasters. I still love the thrill but they are a whole lot scarier than before.
    imageBabyFruit Ticker
  • Haha oh pogs. Fanny packs, colored jeans, the unbuttoned flannel shirts (at times all three of those at once!), pictures from my childhood are quite embarassing.

Cadbury cream eggs are still one of my favorite seasonal candies, but when I eat them now they are such a let down because when I was a kid, those things were effin' huge.  Now I'm like aw really?  That's it?  And HOW MANY calories are in it?  Eff my life.

ETA - EFF MY LIFE INDEED.  I just googled and they ARE actually smaller.  lol

That's how I feel about girl scout cookies! Specifically Samoas. I SWEAR those things are a lot smaller and not NEARLY as good as they were when I was little.

[QUOTE]Fraggle Rock. I rented it on Netflix. I watched about 1 1/2 episodes before I had to turn it off. There was a playground at my grandma's old house. It had this really big slide that I thought was the shiit when I was little. I went back to the playground about 10 years ago. The slide was not nearly as big as I remembered it.

Did you notice that all the Fraggle Rock episodes have to do with death? It is such a dark show. Some channel is running the reruns  and I tivo-ed a bunch of them. Holy crap, in one a bunch of them are stuck in a cave-in and they start discussing how the oxygen level is going down in the cave and their brains are starting to die.  In most of the others one Fraggle or another is believed to be dead and they are grieving. H didn't believe me until he watched a few. What a bummer - totally not what I remember.

  • The board game Life.  I LOVED it growing up, but I played it recently and it was kind of dumb.

Credit cards.  I thought instead of paying money, you could hand over this magical card and get stuff for free.  If only :)

Also, McDonalds breakfast sandwiches seem way smaller now than they did when I was a kid.

  • Oh I had Tommy Hilfiger overalls in high school.  They were my favorite outfit.  Wtf.  I also had bib overall shorts I loved wearing in the summertime.  I looked like such a dumbass.

I've seen them around these days, too.  They are more fitted, so, not the big ass baggy ones we used to wear.  I refuse to wear them though.

  • The smell of Aussie hairspray.  I so wanted to smell like that growing up.

Please tell me someone else remembers pegging their jeans and wearing 2 pairs of scrunch socks with the colors reversed.

Swishy pants! Did anyone have the pants (that were really more like leggings now that I think about it) with the stirrups? Some kids would be "cool" and not hook the stirrup around their foot, I judged them. Or body suits? They snapped at your crotch like a onesie? I had a ton of those too.

ETA: Sounds like we would have been BFFs Hike!
  • Haha yes nicole!

  • I remember sneaking to stay up late to watch a show...i think it was called Married with children, and I watched it a few years ago and WOW was it ever terrible!

I also thought Grease was THE BEST movie EVER made when I was a kid, I watched it like 3 billion times, no I doubt I could get all the way through it.
  • Oh god, I had both the stirrup pants and the body suits.  I always judged the girls that had the hips of the body suit pulled higher than their waist band so you could see a little skin.  Guess that was the early 90's equivalent of your thong showing in your low rise jeans.

  • Whatever y'all.  I love the Fraggles.  They're my go-to sick day show.  And they're all about world peace, man.  Not death.
  • Alynne, Grease is one of the greatest movies ever!  Now Grease 2 was pretty bad (though I did love that too when I was young).
