Lent, lent lent lent Lent!

Any Catholics out there?
What are you giving up for Lent this year?
Anything you are attempting to give up that you know you will fail at?

  • I'm no longer a practicing Catholic, but one year I gave up coffee. While working as a barista in a coffee house. I didn't last long.

I have been one to give up Lent for Lent in recent years, as lame as that sounds. I used to try to do it as a kid, but always failed. So I gave up trying. (I'm not Catholic though - raised Methodist.)

  • 'We dont do lent. If I had to, I'd give up the internet. That would be an extreme, extreme test.
  • I've never practiced fasting for the Lenten season, but I was raised Baptist.

If I were practicing, I'd probably do Coke.
  • I give up multiple things, because I know I won't be able to follow through with some.
This year it is: fast food, candy, swearing.
Swearing will be the first to go, probably within a day.
I predict fast-food failure by the two week mark.

  • I also don't eat meat on Fridays during Lent. I would do that all year if I were a better Catholic.

  • Ooh yea, soda would be a much more resonable one for me.
How long do you  do it for?

     40 days.
  • I quit smoking during Lent a few years ago. It made for a bitchy Easter season.

  • I love the Lent because of all of the fish frys that local churches hold on Fridays. The fish is always amazing.
  • I'm not Catholic but BF is. He usually gives up fast food which means that I pretty much do to. Although the one time I did get McDonald's without him he ate my leftovers and claimed that didn't count. He's pretty bad at giving things up.

  • If we were doing Lent, N would love if I gave up swearing (or using the Lord's name in vain.) I get "the look" when I do that! Not good. He tells me that my excessive swearing is "unnecessary" but I really can't help it. I'm trying though.

  • Oh yea, I did just watch 40 days...
Yea, so glad we don't do lent I suck at stuff like that.
  • The fast food thing is also to help my waistline. I just need the little added guilt of God's judgement.

Even though I'm the world's worst Catholic, I feel huge amounts of guilt if I don't give something up for Lent.  This year it will be soda, fast food, and *fingers crossed* extra snacking.  Possibly something else if I can think of it.  Or maybe I'll just try and volunteer more.  We'll see.

Story:  While in college, I once accidentally ate chicken on a Friday in Lent and that night, an ex-boyfriend from high school surprised me and showed up at the door of my dorm room.  It was not a happy surprise.  I blame the chicken.
  • Apparently He didn't find that funny, because I just got disconnected.

  • Coffee would be the hardest for me... I did it once.

It's truly terrible.  The fact that my father goes to mass daily and never eats meat on Fridays does not help.
  • I understand it as giving something up that pretty much distracts you from God. Therefore, whatever you give up will bring you closer to God.  So for me internet and my cell phone would be good candidates..

  • Mass daily? Wow. That is hardcore.
I tend to be light hearted about my Catholic failings. That's what purgatory is for, right?
Not when I was little though. If I accidentally stole a pen, I would cry.

  • I had a friend in high school who's family was very hardcore Catholic. Her brother told on her for eating a cheeseburger on a Friday and she was grounded for a month. And when we went to a cheerleading camp that fell over a weekend, they found a taped sermon for her to watch on Sunday night. They also called her when she was supposed to watch it and sat on the phone listening to make sure that she did.

  • Well, I am heading to bed. Hopefully I will wake up with more resolve.
    Night ladies.

  • I'm not Catholic, but I began "practicing" Lent in college. This year, it's drinking during the week...except for the week of my HM. Hey, I'll add an extra week past Easter! =) J is doing it too. He wants to do something to help lose weight, so I suggested he give up his beer with dinner during the week, and here we are. We had two tonight (for Mardi Gras) and tomorrow it's on!

I'm also giving up being lazy and sleeping in to 11 everyday. I need to use that time to go to the gym

  • Lent started on Monday for me! I gave up ALL sweets. I've really been abusing my body with them. I'm doing pretty well right now. We also don't do meat on Wednesdays, in addition to Fridays.

  • I am Catholic and try to observe the rules of fasting and abstaining from meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent.

I do however, have a problem with keeping my weiight up because of all the surgeries recently so if I drop weight, I stuff up and thin God understands why I have to do it.
