Thanks for the help on the ceremony traditions performed! You ladies are wonderful!!!

Hi Ladies,

I need your help.

My fiance and I are working on the ceremony program, and we are not sure when some of the traditions are supposed to happen in the ceremony. We are having a Catholic wedding. We are doing a unity candle, Arras/ gold coins, the Lazo, and we are placing flowers in front of the holy family to bless our unity.

Does anyone know when in a Catholic ceremony these are supposed to occur?

Thank you so much for your help, it is greatly appreciated!

  • You'll probably have better luck posting this on the Catholic Weddings board.

  • My priest told us that the Catholic Church does not do a unity candle.
  • The unity candle is not a part of the traditional Catholic wedding rite.  Some churches allow it to be perfromed, other discourage or forbid it.  I've never heard of the gold coin thing.  I would talk to your priest about the ceremony.  He can tell you what elements are allowed and when they would typically go in the ceremony.
  • At the chuch we are getting married in, the priest does not allow a unity candle, but told us if we wanted one it would have to be done at the reception. We opted not to do one. But I would definitely post this on the Catholic board, those ladies are very knowledgeable over there. As far as placing the flowers at the feet of the holy family, I think this happens as you go up to the altar, but don't quote me for sure bc we are still undecided if we are doing this.

Also, I see this is your first post, here is a great website for Catholic brides: catholicweddinghelp.com

It will become your really good friend during the planning process.
  • Thank you so much Ladies!

You have all been so helpful, I will definitely check out those sites!!!

Have a great week and I wish you all the best!!!
  • Our church is allowing us to do all three pieces, the lazo, the unity candle and the coins without a problem.  I have to read further about it as to when each is done.  But I do know that the lazo is incorporated or put on you both right after you say your vows.  I believe the coins are given at the end but I'd have to double check that.  It is really weird that some churches would not allow the unity candle ..... Thank God ours is not so strict.
