MGs - name change advice

I'm honestly at a loss at where to start with this.  I think I have time to make the change since we haven't booked a HM yet and won't until sometime in 2012.

I guess the first thing I have to do is get our marriage certificate.  After that is there a recommended order for changing things?  Maybe a helpful website?  Any advice would be appreciated.  TIA!

After I got the license, I went to social security, dmv, and then the bank.  After that I did work and any other smaller accounts I had.

Don't worry, it is not as bad as it seems.
Yes, first you will need to get copies of your marriage certificate. I sugest 2 copies just in case. Definitely call the town first to find out their requirements and how much the copies cost, etc. I showed them my driver's license for ID when I picked up the copies.

It doesn't matter whether you change your Social Security card or Driver's License first. I chose to do my Driver's License first. I needed to show them the marriage certificate, my old license (or passport) and proof of address in order to change my license. (You don't need to show your social security card, so it doesn't need to be changed yet).

You can visit a Social Security office, or change it through the mail. It takes about 2 weeks to get the new card. They needed to see the marriage certificate, proof of Id (driver's license or passport, doesn't matter if they are changed already or not).

Next, I changed my name at work, since they needed my new social security card. That changed it on my W2, so then my mortgage company contacted me and I changed my name with them, and with my bank. They all basically just need to see the marriage certificate, and some require your new license.

I haven't changed my passport yet, because our honeymoon was booked in my maiden name. For travel, you only need to show your passport or license, one or the other, so I just used my passport for ID and I was fine.  You have to pay to get the passport changed, and it isn't cheap, so I've been putting that off.

I went online and changed my name on my other accounts like cell phone, etc.. and I've been changing my credit cards slowly. Everything doesn't have to be done all at one time. Once you get your license changed, it is a piece of cake.

Let me know if you have any questions!!

I was able to order my certificate online rather than go to the office.  So when it came I changed it.  Took about a week. I asked for 3 copies just in case I didnt get one back from someone.
The worst part is waitingat SS office.  You can fill the form out online before hand and then go. I waited an hour it wasnt so bad.  I went to the DMV on a different day becuase I had taken a Monday off to change my name not realizing the DMVs are closed on Mondays.

The hardest part for me was actually changing my name. I was all gung ho and then as it got closer to me changing I go so sad about it. But now I like my new name a lot.

I echo getting multiple certified copies of your marriage license. I changed my last name a few years ago (not a marriage related change) and I was surprised how many banks, cc companies require you mail them a certified copy of the license or name change order.

Wow, thanks everyone!  I'm feeling a bit less overwhelmed.

Cindy, that's a very thorough breakdown, much appreciated!

P.S. - I didn't have to mail my certificate anywhere yet.. but the copies only cost me $7 each so it wasn't bad.. and as for the social security office, that probably depends when and where you go. I went on a random weekday afternoon and only waited 15 minutes.

follow up with your job and make sure they change your status to married in your checks/payroll. for 2 months, my husband and i were still both listed as single, even though i went under his insurance, they still had us listed as single. (we are both teachers in the same district.) i realized this and made the change, i was astonished to see how the checks increased. we are getting several hundred dollars more per month just for being married because they are taking out less taxes.
