    generally, people confess to things in order to stay ahead of the story.  it's possible that a newspaper was about to expose him, so he confessed so he could look honorable by being forthcoming.

    I'm sure this makes it even harder for Maria.

    The woman with whom Schwarzenegger had the affair reportedly worked in the family's home for the past 20 years, and retired this past January. Though her name has not been released, she told the Times that she left voluntarily and received severance pay.

    Since the OP is down the page, I'll ask here:  why did he 'fess up now?  It didn't sound like his babymama was trying to blackmail him or anything.  Maria could have divorced him without anyone knowing the sordid details.
