Help with Wedding Cake!

Hello everyone!  I'm wondering where people are buying their wedding cakes from in the Twin Cities.  Has anyone ever bought wedding cake from Target and if so are they good?

We're using Icing Dreams which is based out of St. Cloud but delivers to the metro. I've never had Target cake, but I know some other Knotties have used Costco and Sam's Club for sheet cakes.

We're using Penny Steele Custom Cakes (http://www.steelecustomcakes.com/).  Penny's son is my FI's close friend, and we've had the pleasure of being taste testers as she's started up her company.  They are delicious and gorgeous at the same time!  I think she has a bio on The Knot as well.

    Good luck!

We are going with Queen of Cakes. We also had tastings at Woullet's, Buttercream and PJ Murphy's.

I have not heard of anyone getting their cake from target. I seem to recall someone asking the same question maybe last summer sometime. Sorry...not so helpful there.

We're getting ours from Roseville bakery - great taste and great prices.
We also tried A Piece of Cake, Penny Steele, Denny's 5th St. Bakery, Byerly's.

I've heard that the Target cakes are good but often you have to pick them up and assemble them yourself...tricky if you've never built a multi-tier cake.

Jenn is right... you have to pick up and assemble it yourself which one thing about hiring a baker to do it for you... if something happens it's THEIR liability and butt, not yours...  If when you pick up the cake a gust of wind causes you to drop it in the parking lot, you're SOL...  If your baker drops a tier on their way to deliver it, it's THEIR responsibility to correct the situation so you at least have enough cake for everyone...

Setting up a cake isn't as easy as it looks because of all the physics involved along with the transport issues (can't be anywhere that can shift or temperature problems if it's a hot day).  It's also the issue of finger marks, etc. Just really consider your logistics... If you have an OOT aunt who does cakes professionally who can pick up and set it up for you that's one thing, if you don't have someone who knows how to do all that stuff then best to hire a pro who will do it all for you.

The other thing is make sure you're comparing the same portion size at ST vs. a baker..  If I remember right they use a 1x1x3-4 slice vs. a regular baker who is going to use a minimum of 1x2x4-5 slice...  Just a matter of geometry to price to figure out.

Hello everyone!  Thanks for the great advice on the wedding cake.  We decided on Jack's Bakery in Brooklyn Park.  They have great cake, filling, and frosting and Christine the decorator is really friendly and helpful.

What is everyone doing for invitations?  So far I have looked at Costco but they seem limited in their selections.  Any advice would be helpful.  Thanks!

I'd recommend starting a new post as there are many DIY invite knotties who can give you rec's... Just remember with invites that they can be more expensive and time consuming to DIY than just doing some shopping around for ones that you insert your script and they're done except for the stuffing and addressing.
