changing name

A lot of people are posting stuff like this. I had to ask! We're getting married November 27th. My license will have to be renewed on my birthday, January 5th.
I'm planning on waiting untill then to change my name on my license so I don't have to pay for a new one and it's a month away anyway.
Should I wait to change my SS and band account until then too? Or is it okay to do it before. I'm not sure what to do now.

Re: changing name

  • Do your SS first as you need that in order to make the other changes.

  • Is it okay to go to SS in December though or should I wait until January?
  • Yes, you will need to change your name with SS before you can change it on your bank account or license. Also, some states have restrictions on how long you can go between the SS change and license change. You know that you don't have to wait until the 5th to renew your license, right? Most places you can do it up to a month in advance, so 12/5. That way you don't have to renew it and THEN change your name, because I agree that would be a hassle.

I got married on 11/27 too!

  • November 27 was our first choice. Never met anyone with the same date!!! I'm hoping for SOME snow. I'm also hoping its decent weather and that it wont stop people from coming! How was the weather for yours? [even though you're in texas]

I didn't think of that, going before the 5th

  • It was 67 and beautiful, which is normal. We only really get cold in December and January. Its 90 here already, and has been for a couple weeks.

  • I don't understand why you can't just renew your license in December when you do all of your other name change stuff?  If you get a new license in December, you wouldn't have to renew it again in January.

Don't you have to pay for a new license regardless of when you renew it?

Once you have your marriage cert filed (your officiatn should do this) you'll be able to apply for a new SS card. Yes, I would do it in Dec.  It will take a couple of weeks to get mailed to you so you're looking at Jan before you can change your driver's license anyway.

You have to pay 30 dollars for it, but if you just want a new one, you have to pay for that. so it would cost more than 30 dollars.

    Thank you!!!

When do we get the certificate? Does it take long? I guess it depends on the person?
  • Ours was filed immediately, and we ordered them (extra copies), and had them within a week or so. We got married on May 22, I waited till I was closer to my b-day at the end of June so I didnt have to do it again.

You're talking about the certificate right?
I have to file for this myself?
How many copies did you order?
You waitited to do what at the end of june? Change everything?
  • Your officiant should file your license for you, and you'll get it in the mail. I just brought the original with me to make the changes, and they gave it back to me. No one has asked me for a certified copy yet, and I've done all the banks, mortgage, etc. Ours was waiting in our mailbox when we got back from our honeymoon.

  • I asked my mom about the marriage license and she's not sure because she got married in philly and we live in the suburbs. But she said we have to go to the court house out here to get our marriage license. This lady I work with also works at the court house and said that's where I get it from.

So my minister that I'm hiring wont be giving it to me.?
We meet with him in a few weeks. I'm going to double check with him.

<div>You have to get the license yourself, but the minister files it.</div>
  • Wanted to add that it may be better to go ahead and change everything sooner rather than later. When DH and I got married, I switched onto his insurance. That had to be done within a month of us getting married and it needed my new name / information.

I'm not sure if that's how it works with all insurance's, but that's how it was explained to us.

    Good Luck!

  • Now the marriage license and certificate are the same thing?
  • Thank you Bree.
