What's your best dress advice?

This advice for our magazine. A piece based on Knottie quotes, so your knot name will be used.

What’s your best dress advice? I’d love to hear fashion advice like, “Don’t be afraid to wear color or statement earrings.” Or “I love a cardigan w/ a wedding dress for pics.” Or practical advice is also great (I know that you have plenty of that.)

Thanks in advance!

Re: What's your best dress advice?

  • Wear whatever makes you feel beautiful.
  • When I started dress shopping I had a certain style in mind and I wouldn't try anything else on.  But then I got frustrated because non of the dresses were "the one".  But then I tried on something that I didn't think I'd ever wear and I fell in love with it.  So my advice would be to.....

Think outside the box...try a dress on that you normally wouldn't see yourself wearing.  You might be surprised at how you look in the dress and it could be the perfect fit you've been looking for.
  • Once you buy your dress- stop looking! There are tons of beautiful dresses out there and you will go crazy if you keep looking. Too many women end up with second or third dresses because they keep second-guessing themselves.

  • The best advice I got was from my 5 year old niece.  I couldn't decide between white and ivory for my dress, and both colors looked good on me.  So, I asked my niece.  She rolled her eyes and said "White Auntie - princesses have to wear white."  This was after she helped me pick out the style "You should wear that one; it twirls better."
  • Once you buy one, stay away from the dress shops and the magazines.  You will be beautiful in anything, don't get hung up on the details.  See the forest in the trees.

Also, if you choose to buy online, try some real dresses on first.  Get an idea for what fits your body.  Find a shape you like, and styles that you love, then find them online.  And then, after buying one, see my previous advice.
  • Go to a really good bridal salon as some of the reps have a keen eye for knowing what might look on you and to help pull dresses that you wouldn't have thought of. It's too overwhelming to look through the racks of dresses and guess what they look like while still in the bag.
