post-wedding questions

how soon after tying the knot did you all change your name? and what all did you have to do? i am trying to figure out the proper order of changing it (social security, driver's license, passport, etc) but I can't really find a definitive list anywhere. any and all suggestions would be appreciated. thanks in advance!

I waited a month after cause I was waiting on the marriage certificate in the mail and that takes FOREVER like 6 weeks. I ended going to the county clerks office and got a certified copy. I went to SS first then to DPS. There is a lot of SS offices. I went to the one DT I was there for about 1-1/2 hour. DPS took the longest.

I waited until I got the license (it only took about a month).  I got my DL done first and then SS.  I'm not sure it matters much as long as you've got that certificate or a certified copy.  I would make sure to get those two done first, and then everything else.  Make sure to find out if your job needs a certified copy of your marriage certificate just for their records.  Mine did, but perhaps it's because I'm a teacher.  I'm still working on insurance, student loans, car lease...I think that's it.  :)  Congrats and good luck with everything.

I got a certified copy the day after we got back from the Honeymoon. I went to DPS first took 8 hours!! I reccommend not going to one in town, go to a small town outside of Houston. I went to SS the next day. That took 20 minutes! I got mine done fast because I needed it to be changed for my military id I was getting the next week. It's easier if my name is the same as his when it comes to the military.

It took over 6 weeks maybe 7 for us to get the actual marriage lisence. I couldnt wait that long so I got two certified copies.

hasn't happened yet, but asafp. I'll be changing my name legally asap, so that I can change my name professionally asap. I'll have to get my nursing license in my maiden name initially, then change the name on the license after my married name is officially legally changed. ugh.

I did my DL first. And have yet to do the SS. I've really be meaning to get around to that. There's just not an office that's very close to me. But I've already changed the name on my teaching license.

Maybe I can talk my mom into going with me to the SS office tomorrow.

I waited 6 months .... because I'm lazy. :-)  I did the SS office first and then DPS.  Just remember to bring cash to the DPS office, they won't take a credit card.  Both of mine took under 10 minutes.
