Any good sunburn remedies?

H and I went fishing this weekend, and when we were halfway around the lake I realized I forgot to put sunscreen on my back and shoulders. Dumb, I know. I am so burnt :( I have aloe vera, but does anyone have any other good remedies for a sunburn?

  • Noxzema.  Old school white pasty cream stuff.  Cools the burn.

  • I love the Aloe Cooling Gels they have...refrigerate and apply. It's like heavenly relief, and I swear by the Ocean Potion After-Sun Lotion for when you're sunburned. It keeps you from peeling.

[QUOTE]I've heard soaking tea bags and placing them directly on the burn can help. You might try googling that though for specifics.

This does actually work for  me
  • My grandma always rubbed distilled white vinegar on our sunburns. My sister swears by it.

We used to soak gauze in witch hazel and let it rest on our burns until it was warm.  Then we resoaked them in witch hazel and repeated the process.  Witch hazel is for skin irritations and abrasions.

This is what my mom does. It works best though if you do it right after getting burnt.

  • I do what rachel does along with using vinegar...smells terrible but works wonders!!

  • I just told H to put the aloe in the fridge when he gets home, and I have some black tea so I'll try that. Hoping I can avoid the vinegar, but at this point I'll try anything. Thanks for all the tips so far!

I like balsamic vinegar. My mom and I are about as dark as a piece of paper. My mom lived in Nigeria as a kid and she swore by it.
  • +1 on Ocean Potion.  It has aloe and lidocaine (pain reliever) in it.  I had an awful sunburn a couple of years ago (the kind that makes you feel like you'd like to peel your skin off) and it worked wonders.

  • make sure it is pure aloe and not aloe cream....because the cream will block your pores and keep the heat in.

My H burns all the time and swears by Solarcaine in the fridge.

Totally the white vinegar. My mom would cut it with a little water, soak a washcloth or hand towel in it, and put it over the burned area.  We'd let it sit for half an hour or so, and it really took the heat out of it.  Made you smell like a pickle, though.  I still do the vinegar thing, then I keep loading up with the clear green aloe vera gel to keep it hydrated.  And Advil, because it's an antinflammatory.
