Does the dress have to match the venue?

When I bought my dress last week, I was encouraged to get the dress I wanted versus getting something "venue appropriate".  I did just that and purchased a gown that was slightly more than what I had originally had in mind for our big day.

Now, i'm kind of second guessing this....here is my reasoning...this is not a first marriage for me or my guy but it is the first wedding ive ever had, it is a very small ceremony in a private wooded setting (log gazebo) , only about 10-12 in attendance at most, followed by a big reception a few weeks after where everyone else will come.  I had originally pictured myself in a simple lace gown w little or no train, mermaid style....I had narrowed it down at the salon to one like this plus the one I bought which looked great on me but is dropped waist w lots of chiffon ruffles and a long train.

Should I consider looking for something else that is more approriate or just stick with my big beautiful gown I've already purchased even though its a big bigger than my venue lol, help!!

Re: Does the dress have to match the venue?

  • Wear whatever makes you feel beautiful!  If you love the dress then wear it and don't worry about tying it into your venue and ceremony.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • Personally, I thought about my venue a lot when picking a dress.  We're having an outdoor ceremony at a 200 year old (non working!) farm.

So i picked a tea-length dress that fit the more "garden party" feel of the venue as opposed to more of a ball gown.
  • I ended up going with a natural waist ball gown and i always thought I would wear something form fitting. I'm getting married by the ocean, but I didn't limit myself to a 'beachy' dress. I was torn between 2 dresses, the one I purchased and one I thought was more appropriate, but I went for the one I really wanted and I don't regret it at all.

Don't limit yourself either, the woods can be just as glamourous and romantic as any grand ballroom!

  • Defintely where the dress that makes you feel beautiful.  I've seen all types of dresses at all types of venues. :)
  • Thank you everyone :)  I appreciate the encouragement...i luv the dress, we had originally planned a bigger wedding but in the end small+honeymoon won out budget wise and i fell in love with the dress i choose (style wise), so I feel better knowing I dont have to try and match my venue seeing as this is my one chance to shine, thanks :)
