My Fitness Pal?

So I've been trying various "diets" to lose at least 10 pounds before my wedding in September, such as the South Beach Diet, but nothing has worked. I eat well, try to limit my carbs to breakfast and lunch and work out 5 days a week...but still nothing. I was considering weight watchers but not sure I want to spend that much per month. Can you all tell me how successful you have been on MFP, the key to following it, and general advice? Also, my screen name on MFP is missy1081 if anyone would be willing to add me as a friend. Thanks :

Re: My Fitness Pal?

  • I have lost 25.4 pounds on MFP (19.4 of that since January 25). I am not a particularily fast loser, but I'm happy because at least the scale is moving down, not up.

I did not go with the calorie limits that MFP set for me, I used a BMR calculator like the one here: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/ and then used that with the Harris-Benedict equation here: http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict-equation/ to find out what my body approximately burns every day. Then I took 500 calories off of that, and that is what I set my MFP calorie goal at (if you do the same, don't go below 1200.)

I track everything I eat, every day, and it works well for me. If you are entering your exercise on MFP, I find that it over-estimates calorie burn, so I don't always eat all of my exercise calories back, just enough to get past 1400 net (my daily goal is 1750). If you use a HR monitor, you could obtain a more accurate burn.

Measure things until you are VERY comfortable with knowing how much 250mL of juice looks like, etc. If you estimate incorrectly, you're not really getting accurate calories tracked - which is unhelpful. I try to get 30% of my calories from protein while limiting sodium intake and watching my saturated and trans fats. Other than that, I don't limit anything. I will eat carbs at any time of day and it doesn't affect me (also, remember that fruits & veggies are carbs).

Good luck! I will add you on MFP (my username is smiller52).

  • I feel as if MyFitnessPal has really facilitated keeping me accountable. I've lost 23lbs since I started using it - the weight loss is slow but sustainable.

    I added you :)

  • I've lost about 8 pounds, but that's mainly because I haven't been as strict as I should be.  I've been doing well entering my food, but had a few off weeks lately.  It has helped me lose inches which is important to me for my dress fitting in September.  Ten pounds is totally doable by September!!  I agree with Sarah that you don't want to go below 1200 net calories.  Make sure you are eating enough.  Welcome!

  • Interesting link Sarah; thanks for sharing!  MFP set me at 1200 calories and I typically do okay/go over just a bit but I've always felt it overcompensated for my exercise and some days left me starving.  Using the calculator, I need over 2000 calories to maintain my weight and 1500 to lose weight.  Interesting!  I don't think I'll feel so guilty when I go over  by a hundred calories on MFP anymore!

  • I've lost a little over 25lbs on MFP since January 1. I find that logging what I eat is incredibly helpful, the people are generally very friendly, and the message boards are informative.
