[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Does anyone travel to Mexico? Is so WHY???? : 1. I've heard of all of those things except Pablo Escubar. If you mean EscObar, then yes. 2. Yes of course the drug industry touches every country, and I know that the north of Chile especially sees a lot of it. I never said that those countries are completely free of drugs, simply that they do not have the major drug trade-related problems seen in some other countries. I don't think most people would say the US has wide-scale drug-related violence (in the kind of areas/social strati that a tourist would encounter), but of course drugs are bought and sold in the US. 3. Duh. That's why I said "corruption is in many countries". I'm just saying you can't make a blanket statement like "every Latin American country" has a similar level of violence, drugs and corruption as what's going on in parts of Mexico. I really don't get why you came at me guns a'blazing. You're not disagreeing with me - I said that not all of Latin America is as bad as PPs had made it sound by lumping all the countries together, and you're arguing the other side of that which is that to some extent, pretty much every country (in the world, not just LatAm) has some level of drug and corruption problems. I also have a degree that included Latin American studies, so there's no need to wave yours around like it makes you the only authority on the subject.

I took her post as just simply saying it exists everywhere and yes at different levels...But it exists and so what we should just not travel? No I don't think we should be afraid to travel to these places, because we should travel smart and have common sense. But I just think you took her post to hard, it was more general. Just a hey there are problems, so what, we still have to live day to day. And this crazy poster is taking it to extreme as if it is only Mexico, but drugs and violence are everywhere.
Anniversary
• Ok, I get what you meant. If your only point is that not JUST Mexico that has problems with drugs/corruption/violence then yes, I totally agree that plenty of countries around the world also have those problems and that it is a big, important problem. But despite the fact that the drug trade passes through many countries, I'm just not going to agree with you that you can put drug issues in Chile (or the US) on the same level as drug issues in the Colombian rainforest or the Mexican cartel areas. I'm not saying the countries I mentioned are perfect by any means, but they do not suffer from day-to-day drug-related upheaval that affects both residents and tourists. And you'll notice I never said anything about corruption in my first post because Argentina, for example, has high levels of corruption.

I really don't think I "took the first post too hard." There are a LOT of people who genuinely do believe that all of Latin America is one giant Mexico where we all eat burritos and have exactly the same issues. I do not think that the people who made blanket comments about LatAm know enough about the region as a whole to make the distinction which I made and which is important. If their point had simply been that everywhere in the world has problems, they should have said so instead of just talking about Latin America and saying it's all the same.

Also, it's great that you do know about these issues, but try to spell things like last names and countries correctly. It sort of undermines your argument when you misspell Argentina. I know that sounds super bitchy, and I can't type it in a way that doesn't, but it's honestly not meant to be, just that people are judging you by what you type, and if you make such a basic mistake it takes away from the points you're making.
• What is wrong with you??? I just got back from Mexico. San Miguel De Allende to be exact. It is now my favorite place. BEAUTIFUL people. I feel safer there than I do here in USA. Being that Baltimore is paradise with zero crime, I can see how you couldn 't understand that. Open your eyes.
• Although the OP's post is a bit on the stupid side, anyone thinking of going to Cancun and vicinity on their honeymoon should check out the news today. The drug war in Northeastern Mexico just got kicked up a notch (if that was possible), and it is moving into Cancun. The bombing of a local bar a couple of months ago now appears to have been just the start of it. The now-ruling drug cartel just in the past couple of days posted signs throughout Cancun hinting at things to come. Though the locals are sure to feel the cartel's influence and punishment more than tourists, I think it would be careless for American tourists to Cancun to turn a blind eye as to what is going on. The violence is no longer "12 hours away from the resort areas."
