Local Jewlers?

Engaged, but no rings yet since he wanted to let me help pick and not ruin the surprise. So where did you get your rings and what was it like? I have heard bad things about chains like Kay, Zales, Gordons Helzburg ect. But have also heard horror stories of local jewlers closing and warrinties meaning nothing. So where did you go? We don't even know where to start! Also, we are both students so we have MAYBE $3000 for the ring, I know its going to be not huge and flashy but I also dont want cheap junk.

    FI bought my ring on Amazon after looking at local jewelers. He got a great deal!. I recently went tot Kay to get my ring sized and had a perfectly adequate experience. I think the key is to educate yourself a bit first, by doing research online, and don't get mistaken for a sucker when you go in to the jeweler.

    We went to Samuel's to get sizing and to look around. FI ended up ordering online with Blue Nile. The ring is fab and the cost was less than going to a local jeweler.

    If you're not opposed to a used ring, try Idonowidont.com or Craigslist. We bought my Tiffany ring off CL for $8k less than what it costs in the store.

    FI designed mine at Westbank Jewlers in Westlake, locally owned and then my dad was so impressed he went there to redo my mom's ring for their 30th anniversary.

    My fiance got my Tacori diamond from Gregory's in Salado, TX and it is BEAUTIFUL! The ladies were extremely helpful and very honest. They are like family now...I would definitely suggest them. Everyone always compliments my ring and he only spent $3K on it. Sounds like your budget. Anyway, it's definitely worth the look around. Tell them the Bartletts sent you, they would be tickled. :P Good luck with your search!

    You should totally shop at Calvin's on Far West. I've shopped at Calvin's for gifts and other things through the years - and I'm pretty sure my fiance knew better than to propose with something not in a Calvin's box. We're young too, but we're still treated like top customers, even though we're not dropping 20 grand. Ask for Shelby - she is the best. Calvin's is a fine jewelry store - but nobody can beat their diamond prices or service. PLUS, they've been around for-ev-er, and they aren't going anywhere. Go see them!

    So maybe not local to Austin, but if you are in the mood for a road trip, you should visit Beasleys in Lewisville, TX. My FI's family is from that area and have used them for everything. So naturally, my FI bought my engagement ring there. I absolutely love my ring and the quality is top notch! I get so many compliments on it. Ask for Lisa and tell her the Ramseys sent you. She's great!
